Nothing wrong with being practical, but there is something to be said for not being so attached to money.  When I was always trying to optimize every dollar, I always felt a certain pettiness and paranoia about money.  I felt very vulnerable to unexpected costs, and there was a pervasive sense of lacking.  I'm a lot more loose with money now, not stupid but not petty either, and I don't seem to have money worries anymore.  It almost seems like the tighter you hold on to money, the more it avoids you.  I don't know why this is but experience has me convinced it is true.

In addition, being cheap does not mean you get the best value.  It usually means you make do for the time being, with less initial expenditure.  Buying only low-priced goods means you end up surrounded by lower-quality items with shorter life spans that provide less functional value than a more expensive alternative.  Cheapest is rarely best unless you only look at it short-term.
