Re: Why don't liberals move to Norway or something? [Re: Anonymous #4]

Just because those DC schools might have temporarily received increased funding doesn't mean that they were ever equal to the affluent schools.  You can find numerous studies where specialized schools are opened in distraught areas and are properly funded and staffed.  The results are powerful and students learn.

There's an ongoing problem with educational funding that severely limits what poor urban schools receive compared to the rich suburbs and the defeatist idea that believes "no matter how much they spend they could not change" is bullshit.  Fund the rich white schools at the same level as a poor urban school and see how white achievement plummets.  Take away the computers, the science labs, the test prep, the experienced teachers, the clean environment, the army of support staff and see how it goes.  Put them in dilapidated buildings where their classrooms are storage closets and give them rotating substitute teachers and see how your idea of community helps them succeed.

I shouldn't have to explain that poor cities deserve the same education as kids in the rich suburbs but conservatism seems to be antagonistic to this idea.

If spending money for education was the solution, this country would have the smartest and brightest, but we don't.

We don't?  Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, Cornell.  Have you heard of these places?  Some of the best educational institutions in the world are here.  Why do you think so many foreign students come here?  It's not because the education sucks.

I meant on average, yes we do have the best that higher education has to offer, there is no debate there. We are talking about the public school system, try paying attention in the thread if you can.

Fuck minimum wage

Let the market decide!  What would that look like?  Millions of people currently earning minimum wage and not making ends meet will become millions of people even worse off.  Will corporations and businesses pass their savings on to the consumer in the form of lower priced goods and services?  Or will money get further funneled into the hands of the wealthy few and make the rich richer and the poor poorer?

That's pretty much what would happen under a Libertarian/Uber-conservative regime that abolished it.

I can assure you that students and parents in Singapore, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China are not going to let dilapidated buildings step in their way of being the top students in the world, why? Because they put a large emphasis on education from the day they are born, it's a family effort.

There is no substitute for the family unit in the child's education, how can a child who comes from a broken home where the English language that is spoken hardly resembles what is used today, going to compete with a child that comes from a strong family unit.

Providing the proper tools is important, good teachers, good technology, and a safe environment are all needed, but monetary funding is only a small piece to the puzzle.

It sounds like they want to turn the US into that kind of government, so why don't they just move there if it's so perfect?

As a libertarian I'm tired of big government and taxes

dont tread on me

:redneck:

I have often read that Libertarians should move to Somalia or some other country that has a weak or no central government at all.  Hey, low taxes and might makes right meaning the person with the largest number of guns wins which sounds like a libertarian utopia.  No public schools, hospitals, roads, etc.

The New Deal is almost 80 years old so get over it.  There are other countries that fit the libertarian ideal but none of them are first world countries.

There are plenty of people in this country with rags to riches stories. stop making excuses. you are the only one holding yourself back.

What about college graduates with advanced degrees who have their jobs outsourced?  There are plenty of them.  Don't you see that globalization first started to outsource factory labor jobs, but who cared because they had no college so it was their fault.  Now India and China are churning out PHds by the millions every year and those fuckers are willing to work for a fraction of what US workers demand.  Yeah, work hard and believe in yourself but when faced with a new American economic reality where jobs that pay livable wages are not available for even credentialed people, then you have a problem with the system.  There is a problem with the system and to defend it by saying poor people are lazy or have a lousy work ethic is bullshit used by the kings and queens to justify the shitty life of the peasants.

Jobs that require advanced degrees aren't outsourced because there is little need to do so.  I can get an American PhD to work for me for 40k.  It's called a "post-doc".  I can get an American student with a 4-year degree to work as a slave for me for 5 years for 20k.  They're called "graduate students."

There is an abundance of American PhD's and little need to outsource positions that require them.

The excuses are a mile long for our economic situation, it starts with people are lazy, not enough educated people, ect.

All people (95%) have worked in this country when the opportunity was there, but today the opportunities are not there, and might not be there ever again.

We already have too many educated people, a functional economy only needs so many, accountants, corporate managers, lawyers, ect., where does the overflow go?

The saddest thing about today's situation, the young people have no idea how good it was a generation ago, how great their grandparents and parents had it, compared to themselves.

Trust me we do know how good they have it. Which is why threads like this piss me the fuck off. Acting like some elbow grease and a factory job will put you in a nice house with a decent life is absolute bullshit. OP needs to fuck off and realize this isnt post WW2, and even WITH a filltime job working your ass off you are still well below the poverty line

Tell it all the engineers who now have Chinese and Indian engineers doing their work for fraction of the pay.  So many companies have moved overseas for the labor saving benefits and educated Americans are starting to feel it for the first time.

Same shit - highly credentialed, skilled, and educated Americans are having their jobs outsourced more and more every year.  Now let's hear the same bullshit mantra - they need to be adaptable, pick themselves up by the bootstraps and not become lazy hippies.  But when their skill set no longer matches the market there is a problem.  When an advanced, technical degree is losing value and no longer a ticket to the American dream because of globalization, then life in US starts to suck for even more people.  See a trend?

I have a friend who works for a top insurance company, he has been there over 2 years as a "temporary" worker. He is applying for a higher position, he would be hired by the company if he gets it.

So for this new position, it pays of whole $55k per year, there is over 40 highly qualified applicants, many of them consist of auditors, lawyers, people with MBA's ect, all currently working as "temps" for the company.

This is the status of working for corporate America today, temp status with low pay, no benefits, with slim chance of advancement, and highly competitive. This is what happens when you have a college and advanced degrees today, so much for busting your ass, makes little difference.

I know plenty of Engineers that have PhDs...You know you can get an engineering PhD, right? Of course most moved here(USA) to get their Graduate degrees; but I digress. Of the Engineering MS/PhD people I know I'd say it's 65/35 foreign/American.

I dont think so.  Engineers are much more employable, marketable and demand a higher salary than PhDs.  There is an abundance of PhDs.  Everybody wants to sit around and pontificate for high pay and respect.  But the fact is we dont need them all in the workforce.

No degree, technical or otherwise, should be thought of as a ticket to anything.  Thats why you have so many butt hurt college grads whining that they dont get a sweet career handed to them.  Unrealistic expectations.

unless shit got really bad where i live i'm over the idea of moving for better government policies.  i'm rarely affected by "those in power" these days.  they just don't have much of an effect on my life.
