sorry these were found in southeast Virginia (my front yard grass area...about 10 feet from the base of a pine tree), and the brighter red cap ones were a bit farther away from the pine trees (20 feet or so)

i dont think any are edible, most have a bad taste, and im pretty sure theres some bad ones of those u dont want to eat

the red ones are rosy russula, and they are said to be poisonous

are the stems brittle and hollowish on those last pair?

they appear to be russula also, but its hard to see the stem from those pics, maybe cut one in half?

no they are not brittle or hollow.....

There is actually another species that is in my yard...they seem to stay close to the ground...almost partway still in...not really a stem either.  They have this weird grey matter in the middle....turns to dust when dry... could take pictures if anyone really interested...

What he means by brittle is that when you try to break the stem it will snap like chalk.  That is an identifying charateristic for Russula.

The first and last pics are likely Russulas, as others have said, and the two middle pics are probably Scleroderma citrina (sp?), the "poison pigskin puffball," which is an "earthball."

I'm getting stupid earthballs in my area, but evidently no Russulas, so feel lucky for finding something rather interesting. The only Russulas I've eaten thus far are green and yellow species, though, as the reddish ones are sketchy to identify.
