What is Junk DNA?
    #9180642 -

So only 3% of our DNA is genes, the rest is what scientist call "Junk DNA"

What is its importance?

I've heard a lot of far out theories about it.

My favorite is that it's actual encoded memory and it's possible to have dreams of experiences your parents had before you were born.

This might explain 'instinct'...

From what I know, its a remnant from the past.  An artifact of evolution, like the tail bone.  Im not sure if thats right though...

I think a lot of it is relatively recent. The more advanced an organism is, the more "junk DNA" it has.

The predominant theory (if I'm recalling correctly) is that these non-coding sequences help in determining alternative splicings.

Of course, some of it is just old remnants; some of it is the DNA of ancient retroviruses that spliced their DNA into our ancestors millions of years ago.

I think calling it "junk" DNA is a bad term because the more we look into these areas the more essential function we find in them. Studies have been done where random mutations where induced in "junk" areas and obvious fitness loss was seen in some organisms.

Studying these areas is hard because we have to throw a lot of what we think we know out the window to find functional sequences in these "junk" regions. We know how to find genes because they all share some sequential patterns (start/stop codons, tata box, etc.) and its hard enough to find them. But searching for functional areas in these junk regions is like fumbling around in the dark. I do know though that regulatory regions have been found there, some times kilo-bases away from the genes that they regulate.

Some ideas I have heard is that these areas have accumulated overtime from gene duplication events and other things and have accumulated so many mutations that they are unrecognizable as genes and that it would cause more problems to get rid of them then to keep them.

Not any more, we stopped calling it that a few years ago when it became obvious that there's important bits in there. Lots of it truly is junk, wreckage from ancient battles with viruses, but it's hard to estimate how much. It's safer to just call it 'non-coding DNA'.

to let us realize that anyone who calls it junk dna is a retard.

It is DNA that we do not know the purpose of.  It was originally called junk because it didn't seem to do anything.  However, we have figured out that without it, many proteins do not fold properly.  It is obviously not junk, and most people no longer use that term to describe it.

Actually, we don't fully understand how the genome works.  It was originally thought the human genome would encode for 100,000 proteins but the reality is we only have 20,000 genes.  Our DNA is much more complicated than bacteria etc... the histones that even coil our DNA play a huge role in gene regulation, as well as methylation of bases and repressors.  Many genes when transcribed also have introns that need to be cut out before the MRNA transcript can be translated into a protein and this post transcriptional modification is yet another way to get different protein products from one gene.

Many genes are also polygenic.  There are tandem repeats and other areas like telomeres that are thought to not code anything but serve other housekeeping roles, but the genome is quite complex.

its DNA which doesnt appear to code for anything. once upon a time in our evolutionary past it probably did code for something or arose by the result of some genetic mis-hap and stuck around since. this includes dna which just repeates itself over and over. the repeat dna is usually used for forensics in dna testing.

I wonder if we can get even more posts in this thread all saying the same thing...

haha lol yea i suppose i did just repeat it but i added a little you see :P ok some more things about 'junk dna' viruses and bacteria dont have much junk dna only 'higher organisims' do. some junk dna appeares to regulate the expression of some genes. you inherit junk dna from your parents so it can be used in paternal testing. oh crap i just did a genetics course at uni and i know so much more bot it but its like 1.30 in the morning so my brain isnt working :frown:

Don't worry, my reply wasn't really directed at you specifically. This is just one of those threads where the OP asks a question and never posts in it again, meanwhile everyone else says what they think is the answer and 90% of them are the same thing.

At this moment I'm toying with the concept of comparing a thread with a living cell, posts as chromosomes and their parts as sequences, sentences and words of bases, the alphabet.

Some are useful, some seem to defy any purpose, others are mutations which lead to novel effects which may or may not be beneficial to the organism in its survival in the primordial soup of the forum :crazy2:

Is posting our own DNA creating strands of virtual DNA, and indeed is there a point where behavior becomes more than expression and creation of code?

I'm getting an urge for complex polyglucose, minerals, lipids and amino acids to be added to my system. My brain suggests a cheese sandwich :yummy:
