First time grower PmP help

I am a first time grower and currently have 8 1/2 pint PF-style jars almost 100% colonized using the GT strain. I have decided to construct a PmP using a 70 Quart tote, two 15" bubble wands and a 125 gallon duel-output pump.

I did the calculations and 125 gallon pump seems to be overkill for my set-up. I knew this before I went to the store but they only had a 25 gallon or the 125 gallon. Should I put the 125 gallon on a timer, leave it always running or bite the bullet and get a 60 gallon rated pump from the internet? Also, if I do out the 125 gallon pump on a time, anyone have suggestions on how long on/off.

I also would like to move into grains but have no pressure cooker. Is WBS DEFINITELY a no go without one? I am a broke young man please dont suggest just buying one. I will when the time comes.

Also, is dunking recommended before the first flush even with a properly hydrated cake? Thanks for the help.

Yes, if your doing grains, you MUST have a PC. Contams and spoors are dwelling deep within the grains. You need a PC to kill them.

Befor every flush, and even when you first birth the cake. dunk 24 hrs (Some will say less is fine, but RR says 24, and thats what I go by) and roll.

Yeah a good 24 hour dunk before the first flush is good. It replaces the moisture lost in colonization.

Go for the 125 gallon pump, you can't have too much FAE, and since it will be going through water in the PMP humidity will not be a problem.

Everything here is right - you need a PC for grains, end of story. Start saving now.

Go with the bigger pump - I'd be more worried about the size of the wands - are they long enough relative to the length of the tote? The longer the wands, the more bubbling which helps humidity.

Sounds like you are going in the right direction... what are you using for the bottom of the PMP?

yeah i agree cant have too much FAE its recomended to have 3-4 airchanges a hour if your running a pmp if im correct on that if not correct me!...i currently have 3 airpumps all single outlets but i got one that pumps 120liters a hour of air another thats around 60 and this other one i havent a clue maybe 30l/hr...should be enough for my 60gal tub...good luck on the growing process!

I rigged up a setup that had a pump doing 3 chambers at a time. When only one chamber was in use it was fine and didn't dry the sub out, however my setup had covered lids that retained moisture easily. With a bigger pump you may have to refill the water more often but RH should be pretty good.

Anyway the reason I'm posting is to say that you could consider hooking up another tub to the setup. Oh and that I was able to do 2-3 FAE changes between the tubs on average with decent success.

I had some Perlite lying around so that is what I'll be using for now. The local hydroponic store said they have some hydraton coming in soon so I will make the switch.

A PC is definitly my next purchase. Until then I am going to use up my PF supplies and perhaps try a spawing to coir/coffee next. Better get drinkin for those spent grounds.

Thanks everyone for their help, I will post pics when my cakes start pinning. Slobbering over fresh mushies never gets old (ever).

P.S. How is the GT trip? Stoney? Visual? Crazetastical?

There won't be a problem with air exchange. I often mist the sides of my PMP, but that's really just because I'm too lazy to buy a hygrometer... and I'm being on the safe side. Not really sure you need to do even this.

If you are into this hobby, save up & invest in a large PC - best thing you will do. You can then move to grains as fast as possible :thumbup:

Misting the sides of your fruiting chamber does nothing for humidity. Its no use having water just sititng on the walls.

I wouldnt bother with a pmp and air pumps, since a shotgun FC will maintain at least 95% humidity and give you some natural FAE. Just mist and fan 4-5 times daily.

Shotgun FC probably won't work well in a dry climate, like on my apartment... that's why I decided on a PMP. I fan & mist it several times a day, the air pump is just maintaining a good humidity and moderate FAE between the fannings.

If you live in a dry climate, run a humidifier in the room to bring the ambient rh upto 50%

well seince i have no room really id have to drag out the tub and risk knocking over cakes 4-5 times a day wich is why i choose the pmp cuz only room we got is under the bed really LOL and i got my 3 pumps for free so another reason why i decided on pmp and im using pearlite not hydroton rocks

I like perlite better I never have to mist cause properly hydrated perlite always maintains a humidity of around 94%. You don't even need a hydrometer.
