Reinvesting - Green Energy
    #9113662 -

Time to reinvest for me.  With all the stock market shenanigans and recent events I decided I need to reinvest in the market (I'm a noob to the stock market).  Right now I have an IRA and mutual fund totaling investments around $900, originally $1000 but I've taken a hit of about $100, not that much but still a lose of %10 of my total investments.  My stocks are diversified now and my bank handles my stocks for me but I want to change that and take control.  After looking into what and where my money is invested, I am not happy.  I've got some stocks in Walmart, Mircrosoft and other crap that I'm simply not happy with nor to I see any decent gains.

I want to put my money into green technology like new-age solar (the company Solar One comes to mind, recently featured in Popular Mechanics) and algae farming tech for bio-diesel.  My dilemma is what start up companies would be wise to invest in since I'm kinda lost.  I believe that the future of energy is in green technology like the above mentioned and want to get my foot in the door.

As much as I want to pull out and invest in precious metals the fee's and taxes from pulling out of the market is not worth it for me.  So, what do you, (the Shroomites) think would be worthwhile companies to invest in?

I would go with a company that is very established with a new market in green. Like BP or GE find something funded by an established firm it only takes a little research, find something that looks secure not risky but im not telling you nothing you dont know:cheers:

First off don't invest philanthropically, it just isn't practical!  Make your money investing intelligently by not limiting yourself to a notion of philanthropy.  Then when you've made some bank, give some of those profits to the causes you believe in.  It's a much more effective way of creating positive change rather than simply buying the stock of a company you believe to be green friendly.

That being said, Quanta Services (PWR) was recently at and even below $18 a share.  If it can get there again, I would be very interested in picking some up.  They operate primarily in the electric power business, and have seen a lot of business from hurricane work in the Gulf (which will support their earnings in a season where many will be having trouble).  They are also integral in getting windfarms operational, by building the power transportation systems necessary to hook them into the grid.  Wind farms are favored by both presidential candidates and seem to be a significant next step in America's energy policy.  Quanta stands to benefit and indeed already is.

Get it at $18 if you can, and feel good about supporting wind farm production!

Also, nothing wrong with Walmart (WMT).  Even though they've taken a li'l beating along with the rest of the market thsi past month, the stock is still up over 13% this year (outperforming the S&P average by an asskickin' 48%), and it pays a nearly 2% annual dividend.  They are well poised to take share in this market, as consumers trade down to discount outlets.  Their focus on food and the opening of new stores dedicated only to food is also excellent for this environment, as that's a product that people need to survive.

Here's some professional commentary on Quanta Services (PWR) that Jim Cramer posted to his Action Alerts PLUS newsletter today:

Quote:
Strong Wind Keeps Blowing

As I comb through my holdings and wait for companies to report earnings, I want to highlight one of my favorite names, Quanta Services (PWR:NYSE).

Quanta is a unique story because it has a steady business that is servicing the utility industry as it upgrades the transmission grid, and it has great growth opportunity in wind energy. I feel confident that the company will post a solid earnings report on Nov. 3 and may even beat estimates as the company is likely to have benefitted from incremental storm work from Hurricane Ike. For the record, estimates are for EPS of 26 cents on $1.03 billion in revenue.

I believe that management will reiterate its bullish outlook on electric transmission and will report strong bidding activity on large projects beyond the CREZ (Texas wind plan) opportunity.

As a reminder, significant transmission spending will be needed for the buildout in renewables, even taking into consideration the lower overall economic growth. I expect wind project announcements sometime in the first quarter of 2009, which will provide a nice catalyst for the shares.

The company should post strong bookings growth of 9% from last quarter, and the backlog is expected to grow at 5% sequentially. Revenue should grow north of about 20% year over year, and margins will continue to expand.

For a company that will post around 20% growth, 15 times earnings seems very reasonable, especially since I see that growth going higher as wind projects are announced.

Regards,

Jim Cramer
