tips for heating high ceiling rooms?
    #9095461 -

hey, i have high ceilings in my house.  In the winter it is biterly cold in my house, turning on the heat raises the temp from like 30 degrees to 40 degrees.

last year i tried insulating my windows with that plastic stuff and it did almost nothing.

i suspect all my heat just travels up to the ceiling and disappears, so i was looking around online and it seems i'm pretty much fucked.  the only thing i found was to turn on fans in the rooms to keep the warm air circulating.

does anyone have any ideas that can help me?  my heating bill was outrageous the past year, and my house was still terribly cold.  i can deal with an outrageous heating bill as long as my house will no longer be cold.

yeah probably but i wouldnt know how
if you did it itd have to be sealed with plastic because the fibre glass theyre made from floats and its not too good being exposed to your skin or lungs

can you access the ceiling at all?
if so its easy if not maybe theres another wway

or if its your own home you could put a false ceiling in there like in malls and shops then insulate it but if your renting it might just be cheaper to pay the electric bill

heavy curtains on the walls and ceilings can help too like draped everywhere

This is pretty much what I was thinking... seems like the only feasible way to save yourself from that situation.

If you're renting, I'd just find another place with low ceilings.

Well, if the place is not insulated well then your going to have some inefficiency issues, theres no geting around that.  You could try to put up some insulation, but I don't know how much you'll gain from it.  But circulating the air will make all the difference for sure.  Often people don't think to use fans when its cold, but moving that warm air around is important.

I was living in a place that was really old.  There was no insulation in the celing at all (the celing you saw in the house was the bottom of the boards that formed the roof on top).  It had an old-ass heater built in to the wall with no forced air circulation (it just radiated heat).  If you just turned on the heater the house would still feel cold at ground level but it would be like 100 degrees up by the celing.  And no heat at all would circulate back to the bedrooms.  But after a little experimenting with placement of a couple of fans I learned how to heat the whole house efficently with that one crappy heater.

Basically, you need to move the hot air around and not let it sit stagnate at the celing.  Try things like pointing a fan upwards from a corner so you don't feel the air blowing on you but the warm air is forced down into the room. A little experimentation with a fan or two will make all the difference.

false ceiling!? brilliant idea.  you mean with those big crappy panels right? they're made out of cardboard or foam or something?

That's right, that would do it.  It'd be some bit of work, but, if you're not inclined to reverse fans(if ya have em), then, that'd be the way to go(IMO).

If you have a ceiling fan, turn the fan direction so it is blowing air towards the ceiling.

That will force the warm air down the walls and into the bottom part of the room.

Work out what is not insulated well. I'm sure there some things you haven't thought of that can warm the place up.

Window plastic is great if the outer seals of the window are good, if not your pretty much wasting time with the plastics when what needs to be done is caulking the seams or replacing the windows. Check the doors as well, ad new weather stripping unless your 110% sure it doesn't look damaged. If your connected to a building owned hallway or common area try finding the thermostat and cranking up that free heat.

Next go looking around for things your not thinking about, like the dryer duct, the bathroom exhaust, or any type of thing that leads outside. Get a product called "great stuff" and walk around the inside and outside perimeter of your house filling in holes with it. Cracks in the outer brick, places where siding is coming up, overhangs, utility meters etc. are places to apply the great stuff.

Get a water heater blanket, and insulate your pipes.

If its your own house, and your in a position to do some work on it, you may get professional spray in insulation. They put a small hole in the wall and shoot foam in forming a tight seal throughout the wall/ceiling that is highly efficient. This surgery pays for itself within 5 years alot of the time, depending on climate and overall cost to you.

you wanna have the fan blowing down cause if he has bad insulation he will loose a lot with it blowing up

Not true.
Bad insulation will not make any difference in this situation.

Having the fan blow toward the ceiling will increase the room temperature at the bottom of the room.

I proved this to a friend of mine last winter.

I've never understood why the direction of the fan would make a difference.

If you were to drop your ceilings i wouldn't use those shitty panels. Batten the ceiling and hang some plaster sheets, would look much better and would also allow you to insulate the entire area.

Do you have a cathedral roof or just high ceilings? If it's your house i'd look at doing something like that, and possibly investing in some double glazed windows, they are now mandatory in all new buildings here for their ability to keep heat in and drive energy costs down.

It all depends on what you want to do and can do, if its your place and you have some money you could eliminate the problem with relative ease.

It acts as a suction bringing warm air from the ceiling down to the floor.

Heat rises

Cold sinks

Yeah, do why does the direction of the fan matter?

when it's blowing upwards it blankets the walls warming them,
it gives you a thermal mass that helps to radiate heat into the room

don't some utility companies offer a heat loss evaluation?  it might be a good idea to get one before you drop too much money. I think some even do thermal imaging so you can see exactly where the heat is getting out.

but yeah, blown in insulation is a good way to go, as well as dropped ceilings, but they look like shit IMO.

ok here's what you do, mix glue, water, and sawdust and paint all your walls with it.  then make a huge LC of oysters and spray it everywhere.  and the added bonus is if your walls weren't white before they should be now
