Coincidentally I just had a conversation this evening with my wife about wanting one.  I was reading my astronomy magazinge and they always do reviews and product comparisons.  Theres a pretty good article in this months issue (October issue) reviewing and comparing "go-to" scopes.  Unfortunately for me theres not a lot of disposable income right now so I won't be buying one anytime soon.

You can get a pretty nice little hobby scope for a few hundred bucks.  But be prepared to spend upwards of a grand if you want anything serious.  And of course, you can drop a lot more if so inclined.

But I'm no expert.  There are many things to consider, not the least of which is what type of scope to even start looking at in the first place (refracting, reflecting or catadioptric).  I'm sure someone here knows more about it then me.

I doubt that.  Well, Diploid knows a bit about scopes too I think.

Anyway, one thing thats important to consider is; Do you plan to take it out camping or on road trips?  Or do you only want to use it in your backyard?

The size difference from 6" to 8" is pretty big.  You dont want a huge expensive scope if you plan on lugging it to a camp site.

My scope is a small cheap one, 4".  I cant even see the cassini gap with it, but I can see the rings and two cloud bands on Jupiter.

a good option for portability and price is to just get a nice pair of binoculars.  You can hold them in your hands, although they're much better mounted on a tripod.  You wanna look for ones with bigger objective lenses, say 50 mm and up.  And obviously, the more powerful it is, the less useful it is as a hand-held.  I have a 10x40 monocular.  Its a little too small to see a lot of stuff, but the great thing about it is I use it often and effortlessly.  I can just throw it in my pocket and head out on a walk or whatever.

I purchased A gigantic dobsonian. Its so big, its hard for me to take anywhere. Make sure you dont do overboard...

I would suggest binoculars too. Make sure you get a tripod.
