Who here has a telescope?
    #4042792 -

I recently convinced my dad to give me his old scope he doesn?t use any more.  Its pretty cheap reflector, short tube dioptric 1 meter focal length 114mm mirror.

Here in the city the dimmest object i can see with the scope is about magnitude 4.  I can see two bands of clouds on jupiter, but i cant really see any detail on saturn (besides the rings).

I want to take a drive out of the city, and see if i can see any dimmer objects like messier objects, neptune, uranus, more detail on jupiter or saturn.  Supposedly you can see the ISS, hubble, and shuttle if you are good at tracking your scope along the sky.

What messier objects are bright and worth looking for?
Think i can find any of them with my cheap scope?

The only lenses i have are 20mm (50X) and 6mm (167X).  I would like to get a barlow and possible a solar filter.

What kind of scope do you have? And what is the coolest thing you have seen with it? :rocket:

I have a 48" long, 6" aperture Dobsonian by Orion. It's very nice, but I hardly use it any more. Too light polluted where I am and there aren't many good spots around here to take the scope. The only thing I really ever studied was the moon and the Orion nebula.

M42 is my favorite. Here a pic I shot of it a few years ago:

Cool!

What kind of scope did you use?  And what zoom is that taken at?
Also, where did you take it, real far out from the city?

The idea of taking stellar photos interests me.  Is that a digital camera?

Im gonna make that picture my desktop for a bit

:rocket:

That was shot on a custom 11" Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope.

And what zoom is that taken at?

The image was taken at the telescope's prime focus, so there was no magnification. I used gas hypersensitized Fuji 400 color film in a cold camera with dry ice for cooling.

Also, where did you take it, real far out from the city?

Yeah way west of Miami in the Florida Everglades. That image would never be possible near city light pollution.

Im gonna make that picture my desktop for a bit

Cool, enjoy it!

Good telescopes are very expensive. Before dropping a wad of cash, check out your local astronomy club. They usually hold public viewings periodically.

I've got an older one kicking around at home somewhere, but it's been a long time since I've used it. I don't even remember what kind it is, but it looks something like this one:

A bit longer maybe. I only had a moon lens for it at the time, so I couldn't look at any of the really interesting things out there.

Great picture btw Diploid =)
