DragonChaser posted this on the first page. The case I was talking about that caused the girl to be retarded was on a show called the doctors.

The vaccinations they give to babies have been proven to cause autism in some children. Thats why if you want your kids to get those shots you should wait until they are a little older and not still mentally developing in such a progressive state.

Right, and the flip side is:  According to the CDC, somewhere around 16 million doses of the Gardasil vaccine have been given.  There have been about 21 deaths.

This is a rate of something like .0001% and the deaths haven't even been fully characterized.  You probably havea greater chance of dying on a ferris wheel.

But like I said, since Merck makes it, people are outraged and its a news story.

People are outraged because other people are dying from a vaccine that is supposed to be safe. Not to mention the vaccine is not necessary for people who take proper precautions while having sex. To me its just enables people to continue making bad choices. Sure you might get the shot and be fine. But now the chick may be more inclined to not use protection and get something else. Also if women would get regular pap exams the chance of getting cancer from hpv is low. They catch it before it becomes cancer and burn the effected cells off of the cervix. This process is probably one of the worst smells I have ever smelled and also results in a nasty discharge from the vagina. But its better than cancer or ending up dead from a shot.

Essentially ALL medical practice involves some element of unforseen risk.  I don't necessarily think we should revert back to the dark ages because some people are injured during a "procedure that is supposed to be safe".

I agree there are other ways to treat/prevent HPV.  Unfortunately we have the hard numbers that suggest despite these alternative prevention methods, HPV and associate cervical cancer is relatively common.  Simply put:  HPV is here, there are methods to prevent it, but right now, they aren't working.

Have you ever seen commercial for nasal medication and in the fast talk at the end it says something about making your symptoms worse or possibly even death... Does that ever make you want to take that medication??? I mean chances are low but still... you could be that on in a million.... so could your child!

If you read the warning label on aspirin you won't want to take it anymore.  The "potential" side effects include death, if I'm not mistaken.

Although I think your chances of getting botulism and dying, or getting hit by a bus, or going down in a plane crash are greater than most serious risks with medications.

And I think this is the central point:  Its a risk benefit ratio.

If someone created a vaccine that directly killed 50 people per year, but saved the lives of 600, would you be for or against it?

In my personal opinion, if I had a duaghter, I'd get her the Gardasil shot.  Her chances of dying of cervical cancer due to HPV are higher than her risk of dying from the vaccine, even once she becomes well versed in all preventative measures.

Even though no one knows the possible long term effects of the shot?

Yes.

I don't think a vaccine has ever been shown to have some type of long-term (chronic) effect.

While its obviously not a complete assurance of safety, I imagine there are very few substances able to cause severe, long term problems in the amounts typically delivered in a vaccine (e.g. less than 1mL).

Cervical cancer is not always caused by HPV... so people getting the shot are still at risk even with the shot.

No shot equals 0 % chance for dying from the shot.... shot equals whatever % chance of dying from the shot.

The shot also only prevents certain types of HPV... so you can still have warts and spread HPV and it can mutate into an HPV virus that "causes" cervical (and penile and anal) cancer and contract it because once you have on virus strain you are susceptible to it even though you've gotten the shot.

Therefor people are at risk when they don't even need to be.

Not to mention that even if you get the cancer causing HPV stain you are pretty safe if you go gynecologist as often as you are supposed to. Before it turns into cancer it manifests as dysplasia(my not be spelled correctly) on the cervix. This can be froze or burned off.

I will choose to educate my daughter and let her make her own decisions when the time comes.
