i've heard they taste dire, but i wanna try it, anyone know any nice recipes for them? i found a load today.

also i know the oak is valuable once infected, so are the prints worth anything?

Roger Phillips offers the following recipe: slice thin, put in a frying pan along with some shallots and garlic and and barely cover with water. Cook for 10 mins. Then add a decently-sized knob of butter and reduce the butter/water mixture to a thick sauce. (Roger Phillips, Wild Food, 1983)

I wouldn't know about the value of a print. I'm not aware of anyone having tried cultivating these.

cheers for the recipe, will try it tomorrow.

and oh well about the prints - i guess i'll just make up a solution and spread it over some oaks in my area, try and spread the mushroom

They are good, they taste sour, I heard that you could eat them raw and and had a few small slices that way, without any ill effects.

Ha, pretty rare around these parts, I've never found them, someone gave a piece of one they found.

I run across them nearly every year here, but not in numbers worth collecting. As with most mushrooms, they're best when still young:

Once they get to this stage, I'd refrain from eating them (although it's a spectacular sight):

They're good in my opinion if you treat them like they're supposed to be sour (vs. trying to turn them into a steak via spices and whatnot). I've found they're good cooked or raw with fruit or yogurt, though salads are frequently mentioned in the literature. The Beefsteak appears to be rare in my area, too; I've only made one find so far.
