Pro-Pot Group Takes Aim at 'Drug-Dealer' Cindy McCain

Pro-Pot Group Takes Aim at 'Drug-Dealer' Cindy McCain
August 6, 2008 - Washington Independent

A Denver-based group -- Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, or SAFER -- that advocates decriminalization of marijuana, has launched a new campaign focusing on Sen. John McCain's wife, Cindy McCain, who heads one of the nation's largest beer distributors. According to its Website, SAFER's mission is "to educate the public about the fact that marijuana is safer than alcohol to both the user and to society." In the campaign, called "Cindy McCain: Drug Dealer," the group argues that because marijuana is safer than alcohol, marijuana should not be treated more harshly than alcohol in the eyes of the law.
From the campaign's Website:

"Cindy McCain is the chairperson and majority shareholder of Hensley & Co., which annually distributes more than 23 million cases of Anheuser-Busch beer. As the head of the Hensley cartel, Cindy makes millions of dollars dealing a drug far more harmful than marijuana: ALCOHOL."

Visitors to the Website will find a "Wanted" poster featuring McCain's photo (with a $420 reward, of course); counters that track the number of cases of beer Hensley has sold this year and the number of alcohol-related fatalities, and a petition stating, "If a major alcohol dealer can be the First Lady of the United States, then our country should not punish adults for simply making the rational, SAFER choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol for relaxation or recreation." The group insists that this is not an attack on McCain or alcohol.
From a press release:

"As we've said time and time again, we respect the right of adults to use alcohol responsibly. We are simply standing up for the millions of Americans our government punishes and considers criminals just because they make the SAFER choice to use marijuana for relaxation and recreation."

Some have speculated that Cindy McCain's position at Hensley could hurt the prospects of her husband for winning the support of teetotaling religious conservatives. Who would have thought potheads would be among the first to raise the issue publicly?

I'm always getting emails from my pro-McCain family members about how righteous and wonderful Cindy McCain is.  This is classic.

Didn't she have an addiction to prescription drugs?

And yet John McCain is still such a hard-ass about the War on Drugs.

Its pretty retarded to call her a drug dealer, its like calling tobacco merchants drug dealers or pharmacists/doctors drug dealers.

Definitions of drug dealer on the Web:

pusher: an unlicensed dealer in illegal drugs
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

A person who illegally sells drugs

True, marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol.  You can blame the stigma slash legality of it on  quite a few things: Nixon,  hippies , or the fact that alcohol has been engraved into society since pre-biblical times and has been/still is used in religious ceremonies.  But to directly attack Cindy McCain as a drug dealer really makes little sense.

I agree marijuana should be legalized, but going about in a bass akwards fashion is gonna make people think,"Wow, whoever came up with this decriminalization logic  must be stoned off their ass."

Alcohol is a drug.  I think we can all agree on that.

Cindy McCain is the head of a corporation that does business by selling that drug.

I don't know wrote that definition you found, but it seems legitimate to me that you could put those two facts together and say she's a drug dealer.  She deals in drugs.  I don't see why it matters if the drug is legal or not.

Too many people buy into the notion that marijuana must be harmful because it is illegal. Obviously, marijuana is far safer than tobacco or alcohol.

I think this is a pretty clever campaign that points out this hypocrisy and spreads the word about the safety of pot compared to smokes and booze and should be treated as such. It may get people to think about the hypocrisy who normally wouldn't do so.

Irrefutable logic to me.  It is the characteristic(s) of the substance itself (the harm vs. the benefit) which must be examined, not the legality.

The harm is obvious: addiction, cirrhosis, death (cirrhosis, accident, aspiration), fetal alcohol syndrome, DWI leading to property destruction and loss of life, just to name a few.  The up side:  Ugly women can get laid, too.

Just to put some things in perspective, I have a book by Paul Gahlinger, who is an M.D. and PhD that writes on drug abuse and such.

He has a figure in his book Illegal Drugs showing common causes of death in the US per year.  It stacks up as follows:

-Tobacco - 430,000
-Alcohol - 200,000
-Prescription drugs - 140,000
-Motor vehicles - ~50,000
-Firearms - ~50,000
-All illegal drugs - <10,000

It really makes you realize how retarded the entire War on Drugs is.

Both of those professions ARE drug sealers, and plus, you gave the definition for pusher, not drug dealer.
There IS a difference.

The thing i don't like about it is that its pushing a pro lib bias first and decriminalization second.  They would have been better of using a For father like Thomas Jefferson whom grew and smoked hemp as an example, opposed to using Cindy McCain as a "drug dealer" example.

I wouldn't call it clever, its the same old pot alcohol argument with a politically biased twist, which in turn hurts the true message its trying to send.

But Thomas Jefferson is dead.  This is happening right now.  They're saying "we should be able to smoke pot if the first lady is able to sell drugs that hurt hundreds of thousands of people a year in this country alone".

It may be the same old pot alcohol argument, but these are the same old drug laws... just jacked up on steroids because of the War on Drugs.

People like McCain keep telling us that marijuana is illegal because it's dangerous and it has no accepted medical uses.  This arguement is saying 'In your face' to McCain because his wife is peddling a drug with those same characteristics that he argues about.

I really think those numbers for alcohol and tobacco would plummet if cannabis was legally available. I know I started drinking a lot less when I started enjoying cannabis.

I remember being in DARE when i was much younger and some of the stories they would tell you are not only ridiculous, but completely untrue. One story was that a woman was on LSD and thought her infant was a turkey so she baked it in the oven. Now I look back and think thats hilarious, but at the time I guess it scared me.

If you call someone a "dealer" you are generally implying they are selling something illegal. I don't go down to Home Depot buying 2 by 4s asking from a "dealer".
