What's it like to be shot?

With all the talk of firearms on the forum recently, the thought crossed my mind "what is it like to be shot?".

I imagine the initial shock and fear of even having a gun aimed at you, thinking that this would never happen to you, and experiencing the surreality of the moment would be psychologically excruciating.

And how about the actual physical pain of being shot? I can't really imagine the pain of a bullet pumping into your body.

Anyone who has been shot, feel free to add your experience/s of being shot.

Ive been shot at, but never wounded. I dont know if I would call it psychologically excruciating, but it sure as hell made me mad.

Someone told me its like getting hit with a hammer, then theres a transient moment of numbness, then it hurts more and more.

i been grazed by a bullet in the back during a shooting.

i wasn't aware of the bullet wound till a friend asked me if i was hit. i lifted my shirt up and asked him to check around my back and he confirmed i was hit.

at that point i had a feeling i could die, and i asked him how bad it was like it was? i had a feeling of taking a HIV test and scared i could die.

he said it just went in and out and got some ice and wrapped it in a cloth and put pressure on it.

after the whole issue passed i was really upset how media acts out gun violence like its candy and mean while a real shooting is no acting matter.

i was really upset about how kids are handed out toy guns and gun games and such. it really bothered me how that happens while real people are dieing from this actions and its not a game or a toy in this case.

i pray that God will be gentle to people harmed by bullets. or any weapon for that matter.

My best friend got shot point blank with a 12 gauge, I wasn't there to see it, but I know in the hospital and the few months after he was in quite a bit of pain.

If you get hit with a high caliber full metal jacket round it's quite nasty, the kind of cavities they leave inside your body.

I've talked to a few people who were in the military that got shot. They say it's kind of like the pain of stepping on a nail or having one driven into you (just a hell of a lot bigger) and it just burns like a motherfucker because the bullet it still hot.

That is kind of like asking what it is like to be in a car wreck.  There is a very wide range of possibilities, from no big deal to completely dead.  If it hurts, that is usually a good sign (lack of pain indicates shock, which is more likely to be life threatening).

never been shot, but i've had a couple guns pointed at me, which isn't cool.

i can verify that being stabbed sucks pretty bad though. the two people i know who have been both shot and stabbed said the latter is worse. i hope i never find out for myself, lol.

When I was much younger, I caught a ricochet (not much worse than a direct hit in this case) of a lower caliber pistol (I didn't stop to ask the guy shooting at me what kind of bullets he used).

Ya, I'm sure getting shot in different places etc can have different effects, but in my case it just felt like a hard tap to the middle of my calf muscle followed by an almost pleasant warmness (the stream of blood).  I don't know if it was shock, but in spite of the hole the size of a dime in my leg, it only stung after I calmed down and got to the hospital a few hours later.

I don't even know why I even went to the hospital seeing as I had already stopped the bleeding and took out the bullet fragment.  They checked to make sure there was nothing else in there, asked if I wanted to be sown up, I said "nah" and left.  I won't be showing off my legs in a swimsuit model competition any time soon.

Awesome good time! It hurt like a motherfucker for the first 5 seconds, then the adrenaline kicks in and like that one kid said it feels really warm from all the blood. All in all I was more in pain after surgery than anything. You don't want to know what it feels like to get shot, I'll tell you that much. I had to stuff a huge hole in my stomache with gauze every day, and that is just a weird sensation to pull gauze out of a new hole you have in your body.
