Never heard of them before LunarEclipse's post.....
I haven't even seen them in any of the cool bug books I have....

Supplanted by Barbie with whom?  If there is no affection or position to lose, there can be no jealousy.  Any man who could be "stolen" by a Barbie chick is not worth keeping.  :shrug:

Spiders have never bothered me. Snakes creep me out though and my Dad is deathly terrified of worms.

On a side not, nothing is inherent, except by definition (for example: all bachelors are unmarried).

You're talking about a phobic response, not just a fearful one. Some people totally freak at a harmless garter snake in the grass. I don't. I talk to the 4 foot black snake that lives in my back yard, but if I should happen upon any of the four poisonous snakes we have here in south Florida, I'm going to have a pre-rational fear reponse. I'll go with that, and freeze at soon as I hear a rattle and see a coiled rattlesnake. I'll then get rational and back away slowly, talking slowly and calmly to brother serpent.

I don't like small deadly spiders. We have Black Widows, Brown Recluse and scorpions (I have two big one's in olive jars of alcohol, from my property). I shake out my work shoes in the garage. I am not phobic, but, I didn't like it when one of my adolescent girls used to take her grey tarantula to school and bring it out during group counseling...for the sake of the other kids you understand :shocked: :smile:

There is the Lacanian notion and Jungian notion of genetic memory. Millennia of bad blood between humans, serpents and arachnids (the Bible uses both in the NT as very real threats). We all hate what we fear.

i used to be terrified of creepy crawly things... but after being called creepy and ugly by other people enough times I developed a sympathy for creatures that people would usually instantly squash and scream at just because of their appearance.  I try to live in harmony with the critters I find around my place, in fact I don't use my cutting board anymore because a spider has taken up residence between it and the kitchen wall...  I don't want to disturb the little fella.  They are my friends and I find them lovely and incredibly interesting.

I've had a history with brown wasps since early childhood, and as I progress through the lifespan, every sting becomes worse. The last time a sting felt like an electric shock and 24 hours later the effects came on. Having just returned from Nigeria, I first thought I had contracted malaria (violent chills in 90+ degree heat, then fever, nausea, finally, 12 hours later, difficulty breathing). I had to go to thr ER at 2:00 am. Symptoms passed by morning. I'm not phobic, but if I spot wasps/hornets around my house, I go on search-and-destroy missions.

I had a similar experience with a spider as a kid. The little ones don't bother me and they help keep the mosquito population down here next to the Everglades in check. But if I spot one of those big banana spiders around my house or worse, a widow, I freak and get out the heavy-duty chemicals! Yikes!

I (fortunately!) have not seen a Black Widow or Brown Recluse around the house. I blow out the garage when I do the lawn, but there are plenty of places for arachnids to hide anyway. The scorpions I have were both dead. One was on the patio, maybe a feral cat 'frapped' it, the other was at the bottom of the pool.

A neighbor was bitten by a rattlesnake a few years back. He thought it was just a thorn until his leg began to turn black - almost lost the leg I hear. If I see one of those 'Danger Rattlesnake' signs, I'm gonna buy a couple for my back fence which opens to a now defunct golf course which is all 'rough' now. Extra security (I'm still living in Miami-Dade County).

If spiders had smiley faces, nobody would be scared of them.

Hell, even if they had frowny faces, but were big enough to see, I doubt few would be frightened by spiders.

I never grew up afraid of spiders, I've always loved them. I have a 3 year old pet Tarantula who is as calm as can be.

Snakes I absolutely adore, even the fatally poisonous ones. (I picked up a cottonmouth when I was 12, dumb move but I was lucky not to be bitten.)

Bees I find cute for some reason, especially their faces up close and their fuzzy abdomens.

Hornets and wasps terrify me, I'm not too fond of their aggressive behavior and their stings hurt much worse than your average bee.
