New image upload limits in effect - please read for important info!

Okay well I'm not 100% sure it's ready, but you guys can handle a little weirdness right? :wink:

We're trying out a solution to raise everyone's upload limits and new images will now be hosted on a different server. For most users, your limits will double so you can upload 28MB/week instead of 14, your images can be 512KB instead of 256, and your total upload limit is 100MB instead of 50. Supporters now have unlimited upload access; individual images can't exceed 1MB in size (up from 512KB) but there are no other restrictions on usage. Please understand that this is still experimental and there may still be bugs or capacity problems. This is a first step and it may not be the last, but we're committed to finding a good long-term solution.

Q: How can I tell if an image is hosted on the new server?
A: All future uploads will be hosted on the new server. Eventually, we may move the old uploads over as well. Images on the new server have a URL of files.shroomery.org.

Q: Are thumbnails hosted on the new server too?
A: No, just fullsize images.

Q: Does this also affect the Growery?
A: Yes, the Growery will use offsite hosting too.

Q: Why aren't any new images loading?
A: It's probably a temporary problem with our new server. If this is an ongoing issue we'll find a different host.

Q: I uploaded 42 images at once but then when I go to view one it says "this image was deleted by its original poster".
A: All uploads are processed locally and then transferred to the new server in the background. If you upload a lot of files they can take some time to send. If you try to view an image before it's finished transferring you'll get that message. You should wait a bit and then shift-reload to try pulling a fresh copy of the image. If your uploaded image never shows up, that's a problem you should report. Eventually I'll set it up so you upload directly to the new server, but this will probably require a rewrite of the gallery script.

Q: Thanks for the increased limits but I still need more space!
A: You should probably just become a supporter then, but if you need the space for a project which will benefit the community (eg. an illustrated tek) talk to an admin.

Q: If I upload an image can I use it on other sites?
A: No, same as always if you hotlink an image from another site you'll get a placeholder. You must have a shroomery.org (or blank) referrer.

Q: If I upload a lot of images as a supporter, and then my account expires and I'm exceeding my upload limit, what happens?
A: None of your images will be deleted, but if you want to upload any more you will have to manually delete some and get under your limit.

Q: I have offsite images blocked in my preferences, and it keeps affecting all the new images!
A: The new images are hosted on a shared server outside of our direct control, so they are considered offsite images. But remember this only affects full size images, thumbnails are still hosted locally.

Q: I have SSL enabled in my preferences, but none of the new images have an https:// address.
A: SSL isn't currently supported on the new server. If we decide to keep using it, we'll get this resolved.

Q: I don't like it the old system was better. :crankey:

A: Look, we're not making all these changes just so things will be worse. Please bear with us and we'll address any issues with the new system.
