Wisdom teeth...
    #8552234 -

I'm getting all four of mine removed this Friday, and I'm nervous. Not about the pain, but about the anesthesia.

Two of the wisdom teeth are still under the gums, and the other two are exposed, but impacted. So they only gave me the option of IV anesthesia, which I've never had before. The idea of being forcibly put to sleep just weirds me out. Plus, they made me sign off on all the risks (fractured jaw, loss of taste sense, brain damage, death!), so they did a good job of freaking me the fuck out.

I'm doing all the right things, abstaining from alcohol, taking vitamin C and bromelain, etc.

What about cannabis? I know I won't be able to smoke for a week after, due to the risk of dry sockets, but what about before? Can it interfere with the anesthesia if I've inhaled in recent days? (I use a vaporizer, BTW...)

I can't believe we live in the 21st century, and they still can't just teleport these suckers out of my mouth...

I wish they'd have put me via IV anesthesia. I would lay off the drugs this week, though. But don't worry about the anesthetic - you'll go out like a light and wake up and it'll be all over.

Well, I definitely won't get high between now and then. That means when I go in on Friday, it will have been 4.5 days since I last got high. Safe enough???

I've been a daily smoker (actually vaporizer) for about half a year, if it matters.

Relax, you should be fine. Plus you'll probably get some killer opiates for the soreness.

They'll probably ask you about what drugs you've had in the last week. I told them MDMA and they didn't care, just had to take a note in case the anaesthetist says it matters.

Anyway think of the benefit of the general anaesthetic - you won't have to lie there through the teeth-pulling process. You'll go into the theatre, then wake up in a hospital bed. Couldn't be easier.

When I had mine pulled I was on IV anesthetic and it was fine. You're gonna be loopy as all hell when you get done but there is nothing health wise to be worried about.

they usually prescribe mepergans for pain afterwards.  be prepared for some of the deepest sleep of your life on those things.  of course i was 16 when i had mine removed so i'm sure my tolerance for drugs was low then.

I think I survived, but I'm still a little out of it.

I first took Xanax, then waited in the office for it to take effect. Then they gave me the IV, and injected something to calm me down even more. Whatever it was, it made me giggle.

THEN, they have me some nitrous. And then they put me to sleep via the IV, but I don't remember anything after having the nitrous tubes put down my nose.

I vaguely remember having a conversation with the doctor afterwards about putting tea bags in my mouth to help with clotting, but I don't know if that actually happened, or I imagined it. Anyone ever done this?  Right now I'm just using the gauze they gave me.

They prescribed me hydrocodone-apap 5-500, and ibuprofen 800. I'm waiting for them to take effect...

EDIT: They ended up extracting FIVE wisdom teeth. Turns out I had a spare...

Yow! I think the novacaine is wearing off, and now my whole mouth hurts. And I'm not supposed to take another hydrocodone for almost three hours...

Getting my wisdom teeth removed solidified my growing desire to do drugs.  I smoked weed for the first time the very next week.

Haha...

Actually, all the anesthesia and nitrous and so on was very pleasurable. After all my concerns, I actually wouldn't mind going through it all again, if it weren't for the pain afterwards. I experienced no nausea, which surprised me. I woke up feeling great, just disoriented.

Problem is, I can't remember my conversation with the surgeon afterwards at all, and I hope it wasn't anything important.

yah your gunna be hurting pretty about for 2-3 days, and then your gunna kinda hurt for another month roughly.  thats bout how it was with me anyways as far as i remember.

you should check and see if you have stitches on the side of your cheeks, i ended up with them and found that odd, think it had to do with the tools they used, its wierd tho, the stitches hurt more than my missing teeth

It really depends on you how much you hurt, I didn't really experience any pain at all, cause I kept ice on my cheeks constantly.

I'm actually not experiencing any swelling. I think that's because I've been taking bromelain all week, which is supposed to reduce swelling. They also gave me penicillin, so I bet that's helping as well.

I think the vicodin finally took effect. No pain now. And I called, and the doctor did tell me to use tea bags when I run out of gauze. So now I've got bags of Earl Grey sitting on my wounds.

Dude, a wisdom tooth necklace? Sorry, they didn't give me mine... :-)

The Neverending Story.

The book is far, far superior, by the way. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoyed the film. The book will blow your mind!!! Very trippy, and the movie doesn't even come close.

Just an FYI, I smoked after I had my wisdom teeth out maybe a day or two later.  I got dry socket, but I didn't think it was that bad, just had to peroxide the holes.

Wow, it's been six hours since I had them extracted, and I have no swelling, and no pain. All in all, this experience was a lot more pleasurable than getting my teeth cleaned last week.

I think the bromelain really helped...

I won't smoke for a few days, and when I do, I'll try to just gently inhale off the vaporizer...
