Abruptly-Bulbous Agaricus??

Habitat: Ground- organic matter below oaks and ceders

Gills: young specimens have white, then turning pink, older ones brown

Stem: white. ring on upper stalk left over from membranous veil

Cap: white, dry, kind of shiny

Spore print color: on older specimen- dirt brown, on dark spots purple hue

Bruising: instant yellow, after long exposure purple-brown

Smell: sweet almondy vanilla-ish

Location: NW Arkansas

Planning to eat these guys so any comments in regard to a positive id are appreciated. We are more than pretty sure of it, would like to know what you guys think. Thank you!

I do not see the cogwheel pattern in the partial veil tissue so it might not be Agaricus silvicola/abruptibulbus.  Maybe you can find it on some other specimens...

Must be something close to that though.  I don't think there are any toxic species with the anise odor, but that is kind of a subjective feature.

I hear the toxic ones smell really nasty when you cook them up.

Hi Alan, thanks for the help.
I dont see any cog wheel pattern. Maybe I can find some more tomorrow and have another look : )
I will also cook a half a mushie up in the morning just so I can have a sniff hahaha.
It doesnt look anything like any of the look a likes listed in the guide, do you have any names of other things it could be?
Im gonna go look at some more photos online.

How does it compare to Agaricus subrufescens? 

Any staining on the inside flesh?

Have you tried the key in Mushrooms Demystified?

Those are odd ducks to be sure.  The gills look almost subdistant.  :confused:

quite similar to Agaricus subrufescens Alan. I just stumbled upon a dozen or so more today with some good young specimens. I will pick some tomorrow. I have not noticed any cog wheel like pattern on the partial veil, even today when I found the new ones. Though there is kind of a 'pattern' - little yellowish/light brown specs that do in a way circle around the stem and out to the edge of the underside of the cap.......... could this be the pattern you are speaking of I wonder?
I will try get some good photos tomorrow!
I am thinking it is the Abruptly blulbus Agaricus. Agaricus subrufescens- when young has a browner cap and with these I have noticed no red color with the cap when it ages. I will also cook one up tomorrow and take note of the smell and taste.
