Poppies In My Garden
    #8499663 -

Hey guys, I need to know if its to late to plant a few poppies.

I believe I live between zone 6 & 7. I live in Connecticut so perhaps someone can tell me if this is correct.

What do you guys think, could I throw a few in some pots tomorrow? Is it currently considered late planting for my area, or am I still early enough?

What type of consequences would result from late planting?

What is the best time to plant for my location?

Later Guys,

-P.Scott

Too late.Try planting in the fall or early spring.

Go for it. I have grown them this late (KY). My buddy in Iowa does too. Containers are good during this time. During the seedling stage, heat and the beaming sun can kill them in a couple of hours. Your best bet is to wait until fall though.

I was just considering how long it would take to germinate (which could be a while),then 115 or so days til flower?Heck, it might be snowing in Connecticut by then. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I have a bunch that have already been growing in containers so all I gotta do is throw them in the ground. I guess I should have mentioned that.

How does it work exactly. The farther north you go the earlier you have to start them? Is that to avoid the colder weather or is the plants growth cycles determined by photo periods, i.e. shorter days send the plant into flower?

Thanks for the quick response guys, hopefully everything will work out in my favor here.

BTW... for my area when is the latest I could throw some bud seeds in the ground? When do the days shorten enough to trigger the buds to flower? i.e. mid July, early August?

Later Guys. May your harvest be bountiful.

How far apart should I plant each plant apart?

Right now they are growing in clumps in peat pellets, 4-5 plants per pellet. I just read a post on here where a guy was promoting this type of clump planting, leaving 2 feet between each clump. He said he was getting up to 50 pods per clump.

Should I be doing that clump style or just the old fashioned one plant per ??how much length??

Thanks guys,

-P.Scott

longer days trigger poppies to flower. shorter days for veg
the middle of summer is the longest light hours and is when poppies should be in flower.
so thats why early spring is better

Thats weird cause I had wintered many of my Persian whites and by February when I moved them outside and it started to warm a bit my Persian whites all started to flower. I got the biggest pods you could imagine and harvested the seeds and planted them with other strains soon after. Now all my new Persian Whites, Tazzies, and Hungarian Blue Saphir's are flowering.

That made me tend to dis believe fully that day length had everything to do with causing them to flower. Anybody have any other Ideas on why they acted that way?
