Electric bill debt
    #8497520 -

I owe probably somewhere around 600-700 on my electric bill from my last apartment that I never paid. I just moved out and left the bill unpaid. The monthly bill was way too high for a one bedroom apartment. It shouldn't have been over $300 a month when I was hardly ever using any electricity. I had a few shutoff notices but I paid them a few dollars here and there to keep it from being cut off.

Everyone else that I've talked to in the apartment complex said the same thing. Some of them were paying upwards of $400/month. One guy even said he left the apartment for 5 months and had everything in there shut off. His bill was still over $300. He said he owed over a thousand to the electric company because he didn't want to pay when he didn't even use any electricity.

Anyway I just got a new place (it will just be me living there - the last apartment I was living with my girlfriend) and I need to get the electric turned on. I can't call them until monday though.
I'm not sure if I will have to pay the entire balance before they will turn my electric on, or will they set me up on a payment plan? Anyone had experience with this sort of situation? I'll know either way on monday when I  call them, but I would like to know even sooner, so I can know what I'm facing asap.

depending on how long it has been since you last had service, they might have sold your account to a debt collection agency.
If that is the case you may not need to pay anything because you wont show up on the list of non paid bills.

Yes, you should have gotten that looked at, you silly goose.

They will likely not turn your power on until you pay them in full.

If the electricity was in your name at the old place and will be through the same company at the new place, it's almost guaranteed they'll find out you owe them.

I know it sucks, but it's difficult to just get out of paying upwards of $600 that you owe for electricity they say you used, especially if you want service in your new place.

But, I've never lived in an apartment either and don't know how utilities work as far as who's name they're in, etc.

Good luck to you!

It was in my name actually. I didn't get a chance to call them today. Was overwhelmed at work (we start at like 6am) and I didn't get off till 7.

I think it's the entire complex though, not just my building/meter that's the problem. There are like 100 buildings in there with like 8 apartments in each. Everyone that I've talked to said the same thing ($300+). Even buildings on the other end of the whole complex. I guess it's just the complex itself that is fucked up. It's like each one of us pays for the entire building's electricity.

I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. I can only hope that they will let me pay it off little by little or else I'm gonna be a few weeks at least with no electricity in my new place.

I would go into it assuming you're going to have to pay the money in full. I just can't see them dropping your bill because you tell them they're incorrectly metering an entire complex, and that everyone is having the same problem. I'm sure they've heard that before.

Not saying you're wrong, just that they most likely aren't going to be sympathetic since you owe them money.

Now, if your electric company is anything like the utility companies around here, they WILL let you make payments. If you call them and explain that you're short on money, but really need to get electric in your new place, they will almost certainly setup some type of payment program for you, even if you pay something like $30 a month on it.

As long as you're paying something, I think they'll be happy enough to work with you. I've dealt with that before when my gas bill jumped tremendously in the winter.

Best of luck to you, I'm sure you'll get it sorted out!

Wow, $300!!, shit, i have a 2 bed room apartment, i don't use the other bedroom tho, the bill is about $35 a month, this month it was $45 because i ran the a/c for a few days. If i run the a/c 24/7 the bill is abnout $100 a month.

When i lived on long island years ago & had "Lilco" as a company, where at the time it was the most expensive utilities co. in the country, i paid $300 a month during the winter because they supplied gas for the heat & the house was old & all this cold air just blew into the place. There must be something wrong with those apartments.

hell i keep my air on and i have never seen a 300$ power bill.  the most i have seen was around 120$, and that was when we had record breaking heat...102f+ weather.

If I run a single fan 24/7, my electric bill jumps by $20 per month.  You guys have cheap electricity.

I,m assuming your state does not allow to choose from different providers.
If thats the case, and you only have one choice, then they might want all
the unpaid bill taken care of before they connect you.

I lived at a shit hole once that must have had no insulation in the walls,
and I got the hell out of there as soon as possible.
Now my juice is about 1/4, of what that dump was sucking.
