Passiflora Incarnata

Well, I was taking my trash to the dump a few minutes ago and happened to glance over at the woods bordering the place, and there it was. Beautiful passion flower snaking its way up through the branches of a mimosa sapling. (no, not hostilis, how ironic would that be!) Its amazing, Ive been looking at nurseries and garden centers for a while trying to find this species, and after all this time there it is, growing behind the dump.

Anyway, anyone have any experience rooting this plant?

Your best bet is simple layering. If there's any vines on or near the ground just dig a depression in the soil, lay a midsection of a growing vine in there (don't cut the vine yet!) and cover with soil. In a month or two the vine will grow roots into the soil and you can cut the vine right behind where it went into the soil and have a new plant. You'd just have to carefully dig it up trying to keep the surrounding soil with it and take it home. It may still be ok if the soil falls away but I'd try to keep the soil intact with it. You can actually get many plants from each individual vine with layering. Although it takes a while, but it's as easy as it gets. Trying to root cuttings with rooting hormone may or may not be successful, I'd only try it as a last resort. Vines and layering go together.

Ok, the best way by far to get a few passion vine plants IME is to look around the plant for little plants growing from the roots of the 'mother plant' and take those. There are usually quite a few within three 2 or 3 feet of the big plant. Get a pot and some good soil and a shovel. Dig around the little plant and try to save a lot of the root. It is usually just one big root running parallel to the ground with a little plant growing off it. So get 8" to 10" of the root (might have to chop the ends out of the ground with the shovel)and set in in the pot. Fill that in with soil. Water it right away, put in a shady spot and keep it moist and mist if you want.

I just did this about two weeks ago with a plant near by. The little plants keep getting run over by the lawn crew that cuts the grassy area they grow in. The plants didn't even wilt after I ripped them out of the ground. I put them in the sun three days later and they are fine. They are really tough. Even if you don't get a lot of the roots it still does ok. It just takes around a week for the plant recover and perk back up.

Also the plant with grow more in no time and you can come back and save some of those. They are kinda like cacti pups in that way I guess.

If you look closely the vine in the top right has two little plants that just grew from its roots .

Thanks for the advice guys. The vines were growing in a dense thicket of thorns, and I was unable to dig up an entire plant, but I took about 15 cuttings from the tops of vines; hopefully at least one of them will root :shrug: I will try to get back over there with a shovel tonight and see if I can get a whole plant.
And just to be sure, this is incarnata right? I always second guess myself, and have to make sure, as I hear some species are poisonous  [image][/image]

I bought 1 and it is an obvious cutting. It is doing quite well. satyr, do you live around NC? I just remember reading something about where to find them.
