Mushroom Poisoning

Do you guys usually wear gloves when picking mushrooms? My main question is that if the mushroom is poisonous, and you just pick it with your bare hands is there still a good chance of you getting poisoned even without you eating the mushrooms? I've often wondered this, cuz when I go hunting I usually don't wear gloves.. perhaps I should start..

Oh yeah, if I have some I always use them. But I've never gone hunting for mushrooms in the wild; I use latex gloves for indoor picking of shitake mushrooms.

Well it depends on many variables. Do you have sensitive or porous skin on your hands? Do you have cuts or abrasions on your hands? These variables are substantially important when handling poisonous chemicals and risking these chemicals entering the blood stream. Also, some poisonous compounds may enter subcutaneous (under the skin) and cause a rash, or worse. We'll, if depends where you hunt. If there is a chance that non-hunters may see you and get suspicious then I don't recommend latex or non-latex gloves. For this I recommend thick material glove that can either be washed, autoclaved, or even discarded. If you are hunting in an elusive area with little to no chance of being seen by non-hunters, then I would go latex!

i usually pick with just my bare hand. I have handeled a few different deadly mushrooms and have had no problems at all. If i have cuts on my hands i always wear gloves just incase.

Although I have attendend many mushroom shows and conferences over the last thirty years, I have seen many collections of deady amanitas and Galerinas and Boletus' on display tables all picked by hand and without the use of gloves.
I personally would recommend not to pick such mushrooms with bare hands or basically not to pick them at all.

Of int3eret to many. Sometimes I go to conferences with photos of deadly Galerina mushooms and you would be surprised at how many of these young adults tell me they ate that kind of mushroom before and had a gerat trip.

I tell you Isure would not trust their judgement on identification.

You cannot be poisoned by a mushroom by handling it. I have handled more poisonous mushrooms (including several deadly species) than I would care to count without ever having a problem. You have to get it into your body to be poisoned. Other than obvious methods for doing that (eating, snorting, shooting up, enemas), I'm only aware of one really weird way to be poisoned. There are recorded cases where somebody was cooking large quantities of false morels and was poisoned by inhaling the methylhydrazine fumes.

Having said all that, common sense says you should wash your hands after handling mushrooms (poisonous or not). Especially before you eat.
