flouresant light bulb
    #838652 - 08/23/02 06:00 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

i was at canadian tire today and i noticed that they were selling a light bulb that you screw into a standard light bulb thingy but it was flouresant instead of incandesant. it was 120v and 15w and cost around $7. i was wondering if this would be better then my incandesant light

I used a bulb like that and I think it actually did worse than my regular 80 watt incandesent but I definately understand where your coming from since floro's are supposed to have more blue in their light spectrum......

the 100 watt bulb doesn't have to be anywheres close to it it can be 4- 5 feet away is my guess

In reply to:

yes, a tad better.. I THINK flouresant light bulbs put out a better spectrum than regular bulbs .... right?

Usually they do, and another bonus is the reduced heat output. Also, they use much less electricity per lumen......brighter for cheaper.

im working in really crammed conditions so its hard for me to move the light further away..........one day i forgot i left the light on and the terranium went from 21celcius to 36 celcius in 2 hours... at least with the floresant i can leave it on for 24 hours without it getting hot

I heard they put out just as must heat except its over more area so it seems like it puts out less at any one spot...... if i'm making sense here.......

They radiate heat from their ballast. Sometimes this is removed from the reflector and bulb mount, but in almost all consumer units, the ballast is integral. Either way, on a lumen per lumen basis, they would use less electricity and generate less heat than a standard incandescent solution.

maybe try to get some cool air in or I mean its only a 100 watt incandesent you could try the flouro or get a lower wattage incandesent.......

Sorry... To answer your original question, I feel that it would be much better than an equivalent wattage incandescent bulb.

ahh I meant I used a norm 15 watt (I think 15 watt) tube shaped floro..... I haven't used one like that but I think Micky's right flouros burn cooler so try that or get some ventilation if the light is indeed causing the heat problem the outside air should be cooler..... and a hundred watt incandescent should be easy to cool off with air........ Also a timer would work if you don't want to have it on all of the time.....

yeah I knew they put out light more in the blue spectrum and I've read that
thats better for fungi and plants as well BUT in my extremely limited experience
my 80 watt incandescent worked better than my 15 watt flouro.....

for fungi.......
