I delivered for 7 years and surprisingly I found that delivering pizza does not require that much gas, at least in the city.  Wear and tear seemed to almost rival gas cost, with all the stop and go.

Moral of the story, if you need food delivered - somebody will do it.  :stoned:

http://www.mees.com/Energy_Tables/crude-oil.htm

actually, from that graph..

March 2007: 30,630 Total; 26,030 OPEC
March 2008: 32,410 Total; 29,890 OPEC

So OK.. I'll admit I peeked at OPEC not total by mistake. Production's up 6% overall, OPEC production is up well over 10%. Somebody's slacking.

> China's demand is up less than 5%.

Percentages can be misleading. For example, 5% of 300 million isn't that much compared to 5% of 1500 million. (US population vs China population)

China has around 20% of the worlds population, therefore a 5% increase for China is actually a lot more than a 5% increase for any other country in the world (except India).

me too lol.

this might not be true for city people, but i went through about 5 gallons of gas per night. so in the past year, that's roughly an additional $5 per night in gas costs, which add up quickly.

Here at the shroomery, yes - you should know this by now.

There was an economist article not to long ago about China's drastic increase in demand for most inputs to production - truly shocking numbers.  I gave that issue to a friend once the next week's came (it's a damn expensive magazine to subscribe to - so i pass it on to those who want to read it) so I don't have the numbers anymore... Ah - I just found it.

http://www.economist.com/specialreports/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10795714

It's not explicitly about oil - but includes it in a analysis of their quest for resources as they grow.  The articles title is "A Ravenous Dragon".  Not too long - a good read if you're interested in the topic.

Enjoy

wasn't the price increase during the seventies based around the formation of OPEC and peek oil supply in the USA (the main consumer).

As for the china statistic, a 5% increase means that current demand from china increased by 5%. The USA consumes more oil so 5% of US demand would be more than 5% china demand, for now. It should be noted that OPEC only trades 40% of all world oil demands (I'm not sure where I read this otherwise I'd cite). Though after you account for domestic supply and biofuels, I assume, only a small amount is not traded through OPEC. But the important point is that OPEC supply's are not necessarily the entire story for assessing total supply.

Yes.

But you must realize that particular crisis was political (OPEC oil embargo) or man made.

This one is geological.

You cannot argue with the Earth. When it comes to oil we have already picked the "low-hanging fruit". There is only so much oil in there and at some point it costs more to extract than it gives in energy.

As for Icelander's comment about gas being 29 cents a gallon when he was a child back in the 1930's  we have had time to absorb the price increase. What we cannot handle is rapid increases in prices and scarcity with anything as crucial as oil which drives our economies and indeed our civilization.

But if it makes people feel better then by all means believe that the All Knowing and All Powerful "They" are working on it in a basement somewhere and a solution is imminent. They will find an answer. They always do.

(Except when they don't).

For the rest of you, I would suggest preparing for economic disruptions and war.

Ask yourself this question:

Historically, when resources have run low did people act rationally, conserve and love their fellow man or did they hit them over the head and take their shit?

Will we act with foresight and head off the crisis or will we wait until it is fully on top of us and too late to avoid tragedy?
