How difficult is playing a 12 string acoustic?
    #8315972 -

Theres an epiphone from 1976 on craigslist for $500 (I could try to talk it down), and it is old and only has a few scratches on it and I simply must have it. The thing is, I don't know how 12 strings play, I have never used one before...

I love to play acoustic, do you think I would like a 12 string?

The thing about 12 strings really isn't how hard they are to play. If you play regular acoustic, it wouldn't be a problem.

The thing is the quality of a good bit of 12 string guitars. Being made in '76, it might have better standards that were set for it's production. A lot of 12 strings I've seen/played around with are incredibly hard to keep in tune. They just don't sound quite "right" to me, unless they're very old or very expensive.

they are fucking awesome though
good luck!

Why thank you! I'm really hoping I can get this guy/girl to sell this to me. I told them I will take extremely good care of it, because parting with a guitar you've played since 76 can't be too easy I'd imagine. Hopefully that will give me some kudos.

Warning! The sound of a 12 string acoustic guitar gets old fast.

Make sure you still have a 6 string to fall back on.

I'm not saying don't buy the 12 string. I'm just saying its kind of like using a chorus effect on an electric, it only sounds right on certain songs.

I am not a fan of gibson/epiphone acoustics. 12 or 6 string, I have never met one I personally liked. I've played ones as old as early 50's to brand new ones and several in between. To each their own.. I'd be wary of buying a guitar I couldn't test play unless you have cash falling out your ass.

If you play a 6-string acoustic the 12 won't be a problem. In fact I find that the 12 covers up a lot of my mistakes when I play (and I make plenty). And they sound very full/awesome compared to a 6!

I've never have trouble keeping mine in tune. It is a Fender that I bought about 6 years ago for around $350 new. I've never had any problems with it.

Couldn't I just take the extra 6 strings off of the twelve when I feel like it? Would that not turn it into a six with a large head?

It would probably rattle really bad, but you could do that.

I have to agree with unbeliever; although i haven't played many old epiphone/gibsons. i currently have a 6 string epiphone and i dont like the sound of it.

I hope it's a kick ass 12 string for you, man.

at the az gatherings.

It is designed for the tension of 12 strings, so the intonation would probably be off.

It's crazy playing a 6 string after playing a 12 string for a bit. The neck just seems foreign. I would go for it though, they're a lot of fun and get a very different sound.

IMO it's harder to tune a 12 string than to play it.

i have a 12 string. the tonality is off. the further down the neck you go the worse it gets. at some point i pulled off the truly offensive smaller strings. it is now a 9-string and sounds rather nice.
