I cant stop drinking

Ive been wanting to stop for a while, but i cant seem to bring myself to actually doing it. i don't drink that much, maybe 1-2 24 oz's after work and on my day off ill drink 3-4 24 oz's starting around 11 am/12 pm. i also seem to have an excuse every time which would be something like:

oh its a beautiful day. i think I'm going to get a beer.
man, i had a shitty day, i need a beer.
oh, were going some where? I'm gonna grab a beer.

i don't think my drinking is all that bad compared to a few people i know. shit a friend of mine goes through a 18-24 pack a night. i don't even know if i want to stop. i go back and forth with this so much that i kinda just give up.

i think the longest Ive gone without drinking was 4 days, but after that 4th day i had a shitty day at work and "let" myself get one beer and after that it was all over.

how bad is it really to drink a few beers everyday? i mean i don't "get drunk" i just keep a nice buzz going and when i do drink 3-4 24 oz's in one day its spread out through the entire day. its not like i slam 4 down in 5 minutes and I'm on my way. ill have like 1 every 2-3 hours.

If you can't stop doing it, it's really bad.

You made this post about how you can't stop drinking, then you filled it with excuses for why it's okay.

You are an alcoholic. Sure, there are alcoholics who are worse, but so what? Deal with this before it gets worse. These things don't get better on their own.

You should go to a few aa meetings. You can hear some storys about how bad this could get for you, before it gets that bad.

thank you for all the input. i know I'm an alcoholic to some degree, but i really don't want to stop. i know i need to, but i just don't want too. i am going to look into AA and maybe visit a few meetings, but for now I'm just gonna try and take it day by day. since i already had 1 beer tonight i will start tomorrow. I'm going to see how long i can go. ill check in every time i drink. if you don't hear from me then I'm doing pretty good.

It can be really hard to stop a habitual behavior pattern, no matter what it is. For me it was marijuana. I made the same type of excuses you do with alcohol; anytime was a good time to catch a buzz with MJ.

Eventually it nipped me in the butt, and I had to let it go.

I hope your release from habitual use will go smoothly.

no i don't smoke cigarettes, never did and never will.

my uncle actually died from alcohol. he was drinking 24+ beers a night and was doing this since his 20's, he was 47 when he passed. i guess at some point he had realized that he had a serious problem and started to seek help. he was going to AA regularly and was going to church and just keeping himself busy. he was able to go from 24+ a night to 12 to nothing at all. he was completely sober for like 6 months, but something happened and made him depressed or some shit and he went out and bought a bunch of beer thinking that he could still drink like he use to and i guess his body shut down or some shit.

You're not an alcoholic dude. Drinking a few beers a day isn't that bad. Its something you enjoy and as long as you aren't seriously negatively affecting your health, then it really shouldn't matter. If you are concerned about your drinking, I wouldn't suggest to stop drinking entirely and "see how long you can go". Simply set a goal of cutting one can a day and ease yourself back. It makes much more sense to gradually lessen your drinking than to simply stop and suffer from such a drastic life-change. Why make it harder on yourself? You could start by simply making a can last longer than the time you would take to normally drink it, spread that out, drop a can every now and then, etc. Stress from turning the situation into a struggle to quit something that has become part of your normal rhythm and that you find enjoyable is only going to make the matter far worse and create a huge complex that isn't necessary.

I probably wouldn't suggest going to AA either. It isn't as though your drinking has become out of control and it has become beyond your own ability to manage, right? You're not a victim and subjecting yourself to something like that might simply reinforce a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Yeah, a couple beers a day isn't that bad. You're not gonna OD from a few beers. I have a drink or two of whiskey or brandy pretty much every night before bed. I'm by far an alcoholic.

i was actually thinking about all this today and you are right. my shit isn't out of control, I'm not fucking with other peoples lives and i don't get shit faced every night. i think I'm going to celebrate my non alcoholism with this nice cold beer.

Even if he/she was at that point I wouldn't suggest AA. That whole program is whack.
