Make Your Own Mycodome

I am making my own mycodome and was wondering if using fish rocks are an okay substitute for the perlite that they use in the online kit?

Will fish tank rocks contaminate?
Will they limit my humidity?

Help/Experiences would be appreciated.

are they porous? if they are then they might work but why not just be safe about it and get some perlite

they aren't porous, just fish tank rocks, I am not setting the cake directly on the rocks, but the humidity is at 90% in the mycodome, does the perlite have some properties that make it preferable?

If you can keep your humidity around 95% you'll be fine.

Perlite is highly porous. Properly hydrated perlite can maintain 97-98% humidity for a couple of weeks easily.

perlite allows water to be evaporated slowly from it, maintaining the necessary humidity inside the chamber. i don't know what a mycodome is, but perlite's probably used for a similar reason in the mycodome.

if you're not even willing to splurge on perlite I think you may have a difficult time with this hobby

you cant just get a bucket and some old rocks and expect to grow mushrooms

do some research, thats my best advice

perlite and lava rock(geolite/geoton)has 3204727203472 times more surface area than a fish rock which in terms equals greater evaporation.
