Newsbin?

So ages ago I tried using newsgroups for downloading stuff. Seemed good but it wasn't as good as torrents (this was when torrents were the best thing to use).

So now that torrents have gone to shit, I tried to get back into newsgroups.

Newzbin.com used to have all kinds of stuff, and used to be THE place for downloading. I get back on to their site and I look at their games section, and they have two fucking pages of crap.

Am I supposed to be logged in to see everything? Or have newsgroups gone to shit? What's the score?

Since I made the topic, are there any other sites that are good for newsgroups?

I don't have the addresses handy (I'm at work) but off the top of my head, I use two sites called "binsearch" and "newzleech"...

bittorrent hasnt gone to shit -- it's improving and far better than ever. I've been torrenting since 2003 and today the scene is so much better. The key to bitorrent is private trackers. Once you're in, you earn more invites that you can trade for others. Eventually, there is isnt a single form of digital media that cannot be acquired within a few hours max.

If you're just fucking around on public trackers, duh - you'll be disppointed. Private trackers are amazing.

The thing is, I used to be on Oink and yeah, it was amazing.

But now Oink is dead and I can't get an invite to any private tracker.

I've never been on a private server for games though, so I have no idea about that. From what I remember newsgroups for games is very good.

it's not that hard to get invited to a private tracker or keep an eye open for open-registration. once in, build your ratio and earn invites. Or just find someone to invite you outright by posting on message boards or hanging out in a tracker's IRC. I was on oink, but I was invited to waffles within two weeks of its launch. I got into what.cd during their initial open-registration and traded an invite to what for a waffles.fm invite.

Easy. Much better than paying for newsgroup access and the limited selections up there. And yes, I am not impressed by media selections on newsgroups. The music is all mainstream stuff and the films are hardly what is available on, say, karagarga.
