Where I come from, there are all sorts of rumors and speculation, even by those who engage in the activity. Among the most common myths is that it puts literal holes in your brain or it diminishes your sex drive. The hole in your brain myth is probably a corruption of the theory of Olney's legion which has to do with dissociatives, the lowered sex drive thing has no scientific basis.

The only thing that science is still on the fence on is the likelyhood of serotonin syndrome if one abuses it, but what percentage of people do you know who take it that abuse the shit out of it like alcohol or pot? Very few. Even if serotonin syndrome is a possibility (which I believe it is), it is either acute, or its longitudinal symptoms definitely fade with prolonged enough abstinence from the drug like all research in HUMANS has shown.

I say that pure MDMA is less harmful than smoked cannabis only because of the harm that is apparently caused by inhalation of particulates.


Also, I've read on several occasions about a theory that marijuana actually does "dumb you down" at least temporarily by depositing fat lipids into your brain, between the neuronal axons that deal with memory and cognition, inhibiting them from communicating with themselves.

Also, many more people smoke marijuana habitually than not, indicating a strong tendency toward psychological addiction. And the inhaling smoke thing. It adds up in studies like this.
