So my friends band has a show Saturday and they have asked me to fill in bass for them, only problem is that I have extreme stage fright. Do you guys have any suggestions? I was thinking of having a beer or two before the show to get me relaxed or maybe taking a really small dose of alprazolam.

Sure, have a beer or two if you want. You might be nervous at first, but once you start playin and gettin in the groove, everything will be ok. As a bassist, you don't have to worry about being the frontman, so just sit back, relax, and play. Good luck

Beer or two FTW!

Yeah, not a good idea for most people. The majority of us get socially reserved after smoking weed. Not a great idea for a first show.
Maybe a quarter milligram of Xanax and a beer or two won't make you too sloppy. That's about the best bet you have of working through the stage fright/anxiety since you don't have much time to prepare yourself.
Good luck!

SHUT UP!!!
A surprising number of famous musicians started off w/ stage fright, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, you just need to play in front of more people.
And most people won't even notice if you mess up. I've played in front of people and messed up and have had people come up to me after talking about how good I was.

i think the biggest thing to combat stage fright with is: realize that you are on stage doing something that almost every person in the audience wishes they had the courage and the talent to do. think of it as a precious privilege to be where you are. treat it as a holy experience, and leave it all out on the stage.

If I'm feeling it that badly, and there have been times when I have. I just go ahead and go in the bathroom and throw up. Then have a beer or two. But don't have too many, you still want to perform at top level.
Enjoy yourself. That's the most important part. If you are jamming and into it the music is better. You wouldn't be able to play worth a shit unless you enjoyed it. This is what all those hours practicing were for.

Get some Valerian or Kava Kava at the health food store. They're both great for keeping you relaxed during stressful situations. (I used to use them for job interviews.) Probly shouldn't mix Kava and alcohol, though. Rough on the liver.
