MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico City has started a women-only bus service to protect female passengers from groping and verbal abuse common on the city's packed public transportation system.
Millions of people cram into subway trains and buses in the Mexican capital, one of the world's largest cities, and women have long complained of abuse from men taking advantage of overcrowding to sneak in an inappropriate grab.
"One time a man stuck his hand up my skirt. They grab your butt ... It's gross," said 27-year-old office assistant Lourdes Zendejas, who waited 20 minutes during the evening rush hour to catch one of the new buses.
The special buses pull up at ordinary stops but have large pink "women only" signs on the front and side. They were added to two busy routes last week and the city government plans to expand the program to 15 other routes by April.
Mexico City's transport system, which also includes hundreds of privately operated "micro" buses, carries twice as many riders as New York's.
"We were constantly receiving complaints of women being leered at, kissed or followed," said Carlos Cervantes, spokesman for the city's public bus system.
Mexico City already had reserved the first three cars in subway trains for women and children but this is the first time the model has been tried in buses.
Women using the new service on Monday had space to sit down and giggled as the driver turned away men at the door.
"This is wonderful. Men never give up their seat for us old people, no one is a gentleman," said 73-year-old Beatriz Perez, whose bulging shopping bags were tucked under her seat.

I wonder if we could break into that lucrative industry by making panty raids and exporting...

I just got back from mexico city and rode the metro every day for a week.
It was fine. Sure there was an occasional leering drunk, but other than that it was way more pleasant than riding the metro in any other country I've been too. It even smelled like waffles in most of the stations! Nasal relief in a city of a million bad smells.

The race doesnt matter, the culture does.
The best indicator that mexican society is fucked up is the immense poverty they have in spite of plenty national resources and a lack of wars/conflicts.

But those who are in 'poverty' aren't helpless...hardly ever did I see someone begging. Sure there were lots of street vendors, parking Nazis etc...
It's WAY different down there...and doesn't bother me nearly as much as the lazy bums I see up here.

The worst of the poverty is not in the cities, its out in the country. There are many little villages where people scratch out an existence without electricity, running water, school or any emergency service.
Half of Mexico's citizens live off of less than $5 a day. Thats real poverty, unlike the so called poor up north who have refrigerators, TVs and schools. That said Mexico is the wealthiest 3rd world country on earth (if I remember correctly).

Yes I went to small town of about 1000 people in the middle of no where. And I still contend that poverty in mexico isn't nearly as bad as up here. I could totally live off 50 pesos a day...in fact, several days I did live off 50 pesos.
Tacos - 9 pesos Chips - 3 pesos Shared taxi - 10 pesos
Yup that's about all you need.
You know you're in a small town when every yard has 20 roosters in it for Saturday night cock fights.
Oh and in the city, the metro costs 2 pesos.

So your saying that the poverty in Canada is worse than the poverty in Mexico?
Does that mean there are millions of Canadians sneaking into Mexico for jobs to get out of poverty?
