Stock Market: Somebody explain this to me..

Why should I, Joe Schmoe, give a fuck if the Dow is up or down 500 points?? In layman's terms please tell me. I just don't get it.
It's as if the news treats the market as God and if it's up God is happy, if it's down God is pissed.
Why should I bother to give a screaming eagle shit?? Anybody??

Er, I think it's give money to the company of your choice so they can invest it and grow, and the more profits they turn up, the more profits you turn up?

First of all, not everybody has to be interested in everything that´s on the news. Why should you give a fuck about an election in some little warlord nation in central Africa? Why should you give a fuck that the president got a BJ from an intern? (fuck, there must have been hundreds of hours on that, I mean seriously, they almost impeached the guy for doing something JFK did three times every morning before breakfast and then bragged about it over dinner)
The point is, many people do care. And I´d say stock market news is some of the "better" news, in that it is actually important to many people. Not just the rich, or the corporate higher echelon. Also, not only rich people invest. Many small earners put away some money by buying small quantities of stock.
One only has to remember the great depression to know how stocks are important also to those who don´t own them or work with them.
The stock market gives a good indication of the progression of the economy, which matters to everyone, even to welfare recipients and minimum wage employees.

It does have meaning to the common consumer.
One example... If it drops 500 points due to low retail sales, we will see cheaper prices to compensate.

I read all your responses but still I don't see how it affects me.
I have no stocks or shit; I watched the movie "Wall Street" and feel that only the select few in the know really make any money off of it.

Also if you work and expect to have some sort of retirement whether it be in a 401k plan or a defined benefit plan, essentially your retirement is funded by the investment performance of the stock market.
Also, just financial news regarding inflation and the purchasing power of the U.S. Dollar, should be important news to anyone who holds U.S. Dollars or even USD demoninated debt. Not everyone is hating $100 barrel of oil. All depends how you've positioned yourself.

The stock market is a reflection of the economy I guess, its a generalization of how well the work force is doing. As mentioned by Shroomnibber, look at the great depression. Its also a big deal to anyone who is making an investment in the stock market (or gambling with it).

If you don't have any money invested in the market than you probably shouldn't care. Stop watching CNBC.

there´s some truth to it that people without inside information dont usually benefit too much
however its not even about that. Think of it more as an indicator for how the economy is doing. This can affect the prices you pay for the things you buy, the building projects around your neighbourhood and your wage

The stock market is a great indicator of what the economy is doing. Anyone who plays in the marketplace (and that means EVERYONE) should care what direction the economy is heading.

Stocks are an enigma to me. Where is there real intrinsic worth?
Sure, stocks allow you to vote for who will run the company. But is that a power many of us care about? How many of us would actually take the time to make an informed vote?
Then you have dividends. Nowadays, the dividends companies give out are so small (usually a few percent or less) as to be inconsequential. You would have to own a lot of stock for dividends to really matter, and if you are at that point then you are probably rich already, anyways.
That's about all a stock empowers you with. The only reason I see people buying stock is to eventually sell the stocks when their perceived "worth" goes up. It just sounds like a form of legalized gambling with a little economic relevance tied to it for substance to me.
Corporations seem to benefit the most from stocks because it allows them to quickly raise capital from investors, making it easier to expand their businesses.

There's always dividend. In a way you're lending cash to a company to do business with. When the company makes money, a bit comes back to the investor. At least that's how it was supposed to work. Nowadays, most profit you see is from speculation. Buy low, sell high. It has become such a norm that companies like Microsoft don't ever pay out dividend.
There used to be a time that speculators were regarded as bad for the economy. They probably still are, but that's what the stock market has devolved to.
By the way, whouldn't this thread be more at home in the brand new money matters forum?

This belongs in the new money forum.
Well, not really as this is the pub and you can talk of whatever you want in here, but what I mean is that there are bound to be more people who can give you a good answer in there.

That's some funny stuff.
Dividends are not required and directly effect the share price. Some stock have them, some don't. If they do have them... that dividend comes directly out of the earnings per share.
