I had to re-format today :(
    #7774146 - 12/18/07 02:59 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Lost all my music, all my photos, all the tracks I have recently written.

Currently re-installing everything. Kind of a bummer, my fault for not backing up though.

Is there a reason you didn't boot into knoppix and rescue the data first?

i feel you man, my HD just went kaput one day.  No way to restore any of the data.  8 years of musics, apps, pics, etc all gone.  I still haven't recovered from it :frown:

A power surge did something to my HD I could not figure out. I went in and replace all XP files, with no avail.

I have never used to program you mentioned, how does it work?

Replacing the XP files often doesn't fix it, because XP sucks. But it sounds like just the OS was screwed, nothing physically wrong with the drive.

> I have never used to program you mentioned, how does it work?

You burn it to CD, then boot off the CD. It turns your computer into linux, and then you can mount your windows drive and copy all the data off, if it still reads. If you were able to reformat and have it work, you probably could have used this method to read your data off.

If there is something wrong with the drive you have to get an identical drive and take them apart and switch the platters.

knoppix is one of many linux distributions which boot live from a cdrom.

as for the music and downloads, this is a part of the reason i keep either a seperate partition or a dedicated second hard disk for my user data [either D: in windows or /home in *nix]. this way i can share the partition bwtween os's and if i have to reinstall, i just choose not to format that partition.

this will not help if a surge fried your drive, but a surge protector would help this and a surge is more likely to fry your system board or power supply first.

i'm going to have to clone the disk on my notebook, as i dropped the damn thing too many times and keep getting recurring head crashes, mostly when i tilt the book during intensive read/write opperations. it kind of sucks.

if you have a spare hd there's no need to go through all that trouble. Install a clean OS on spare drive, mount fucked drive as a secondary, copy data from fucked drive to clean drive.

But i dunno, electrical surges are never very kind to your hard drive or boards, even with the linux method the data might be too corrupted or just not there.

i love my WD 120 gig external drive. It's the shit. Laptop hard drive placed in a usb case. Works on every pc and makes backing up the easiest thing in the world.

they also sell cases that turn any normal desktop HD into an external USB device.  Simply open the box, plug the HD in, then hook up the device with a USB cable.

I use the Metal Gear Box for that, works great for transferring files, back ups, and consolidating data.

i tried salvaging my data once with knoppix a couple years ago. all the files were truncated and i was so pissed off that i couldn't even get mad, if that makes sense. ever since i've run two hard drives, one with files and the other with the operating system / replaceable data and i reformat at least twice a year. now that i only have my macbook pro i run with an external hard drive, soon to be two because i filled the hard drive on this thing up already. costs some extra cash but worth it in my book.

Space is so cheap these days, there's no real reason not to at least have a small external drive to back things up on at the very least. My friend was talking about some sort of crazy RAID configuration that is a mirror of my main hard drive, so that if one fails the other picks up without missing a beat. It sounded interesting, but unnecessary as most of the shit I mess up is software not hardware related.

The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

You can run RAID on your personal computer but that stuff is really designed for servers. A while back someone figured out how to set up raid using USB and various types of USB storage hardware (like mp3 players and portable hard drives).

But what your friend was talking about wasn't some sort of crazy configuration, that's what RAID actually does. It runs all the hard drives as one unit and mirrors the main hard drive (if you create a file on the main hard drive it creates a backup of the same file on all the rest) so if something happens your data is safe and the system will keep on running. There's a bunch of levels of RAID each doing different things with the data, but at the heart of it what it does is create fault tolerance for your servers and network. You can easily achieve the same effect with much less money, effort, and time, with a backup hard drive and a disk imaging program like Norton's ghost.

My friend was talking about some sort of crazy RAID configuration

RAID is not an alternative to backups. RAID will faithfully preserve viruses as well as data. And if you accidentally overwrite a file or clobber your registry, RAID will not help you.

Data you don't backup is data you don't care about.

yeah, RAID1 is just redundant mirrored storage
