ghetto eberbach

My real eberbach is fucked. It's seized up and the rubber gasket disintegrated.

I tried using the ghetto eberbach tech. I PC'ed at 5PSI for 20 minutes with plain tap water. When I opened the PC steam was escaping from the hub of the blade assembly. I covered it with a alcohol soaked cloth like Paul Stamets. The final product was contaminated with a host of wild yeast (I could smell the yeast easily) and even some type of green mold. Probably had bacteria in it too.

Just FYI for you all, after all I don't know what the vector of contamination was. From now on, I'll be adding H202 after sterilization of the water and to the liquid broth itself.

Mine was cheap. It's a 300ml (??) and I got it on ebay for <$20, IIRC. Didn't cost much to buy.

Might just cost a fortune to replace.


Although I'm concerned the vector of contamination was poor cleanup after making a yeast starter.

Only partially explains the green mold.

The steam coming from the blender hub still concerns me.

Probably from opening the PC too soon. You still had pressure in the sealed up blender. Remember, there's 15 psi in there too, and the PC is exposed to the cool air, thus it loses pressure sooner.

Here's a little tek to prevent contamination like you experienced. Fold a piece of tyvek and place it over the rubber blow-out disk if you're using an AA. Weigh it down with something flat. Place another piece of tyvek over the nozzle, and then replace the weight to hold it in place. Do this exactly as the PC reaches zero psi. This will filter the air as the pc draws it in as it cools. Wait until you're in your sterile area before opening the lid on the PC.

RR...i have an AA921 with a toggle switch and a blow out plug...since i have a blowout plug, does that mean it lets air in the pc after it cools and doesnt form a vacuum?

I always leave the blender assembly a little loose. Well covered with foil. Never had a failure at the hub.

You only went to 5 psi, not 15?

5psi, first time, figured it was just water, ya know?

About now I'm 99.5% sure the contams came from a syringe I used in a yeast starter.
