so i was in a bar last night by myself, quiet, downstairs style. about 3 patrons and 2 bartenders. about 6:30 pm, just off work, waiting for a concert to start.

i order up a sammy smith's, sit down, and the most beautiful male voice begins to croon over the speakers. i'm absolutely moved, i let it sink in and the music keeps getting better and better.

i ask the bartender what it is. he tells me it's nick drake, an album called "bryter lyter".

unbelievable. i make a mental note, get home and grab the album off the net. truly a wonder.

i cannot understand why i've never heard this guy before. what a truly wonderful artist. anyone else into this guy? why is he not popular as hell? is it just me, or is john mayer totally ripping this guy off?

Yeah, he is good. Read everything you can about him; there isn't much. It's all pretty interesting.

Yeah, I dig him.

As Pinball mentioned, he's worth reading up on... he's got a pretty interesting history. Look it up on wiki or whatnot. He was pretty deeply depressed and had major anxiety about playing in front of others--to the point that he tended to perform with his back to people he jammed with.

He's basically a pretty tragic story, but I'm glad he was around for as long as he was.

He, Emitt Rhodes, and Jackson C. Frank are criminally underappreciated folk rock artists
