Is sitting in half-lotus supposed to make your knees and ankles hurt?
    #7447161 - 09/24/07 10:06 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

so i've been trying to get comfortable sitting in half lotus.

while doing it, i feel an uncomfortable tenseness in the knee and ankle of my top leg. i relax and bear it as long as i can(about 5 minutes) then when i try and stretch my leg out of the position it is terribly painful.

i've read that it takes some time getting flexible enough to do it comfortably but as far as i'm aware, stretching is only supposed to be slightly uncomfortable. Not terribly painful. when you experience pain from stretching it's usually because you did something wrong.

so just wondering if anyone here has gotten comfortable with these postures and if they experienced quite a bit of pain when first starting

Stretch... don't push it... go slow...

Make certain that your butt is raised up about six inches off the floor. There should be an imaginary triangle with your two knees on the floor being two points of the triangle and your butt, sitting on something (about 6 inches up), makes the third point.

check, check, check.

it's not a hard position to get into. i don't imagine it requires much flexibility, maintaining it is the problem.
