Anyone heard of Umphrey's McGee?

Well I was just looking at things coming to my local venues and noticed this band. They seem to be pretty good and pretty psychedelic/jam bandy so I was wondering if you guys had heard of them and think it would be a good show to trip on some much at. Also, I was wondering if any of you knew if this would be one of those acid drenched concerts because I haven't been able to come across any and was hoping to maybe find some here. A band called Gongzilla is opening for them by the way.

I've heard of them but never gave them a listen. you have just inclined me to do so. So although this doesnt really help you, i thought it would be nice to let you know that you have inspired me to do something.

They are pretty good man, glad you are gonna give them a listen. Gongzilla, their opening band is pretty good too.

They are more talented than most jam bands. I wouldnt say their concerts are "acid soaked", but its there no doubt.
They are a great band to "trip on".
I have seen them 4 times, and two of those were free shows in chicago.
In my opinion they are definately one of the best "jam bands" out there today. I consider them to be far more interesting than moe, STS9, partical, tea-leaf, rusted root, string cheese, disco-bullshits...lol.... etc etc.
They are amazing musicians. Its not like going to see phish. They are not that unique/special. They just put on a hell of a psychedelic show. They are their own thing, like phish, and make some VERY colorful and complex music(very trippy music). Their ambient jams can be pretty insane. Every member pretty much just kicks ass. Their keys player also knows how to play with his ass, which is a plus.........lol
They keep getting better too/more up my ally. This would be a great time to see them.
Ya, they are sweet, no matter what phish/dead fan wants to slam them.
"thats a bad phish fan, bad, bad, bad"!

yeah they're one of the best bands out there right now. they definitely know what the fuck they're doing and they can play pretty much anything they want from jazz to metal to reggae and everything in between. they rage every show, and one of their guitar players, jake, is just incredible at what he does, though i've heard some people say he tries to take control of the show too much, but i tend to disagree.
ive never tripped to them before but being blazed is enough for me to make it an amazing show. definitely go see em if you have the chance, you'll probably be hooked from there on out like i am now haha

Ya, some people just dont understand why a lead guitarist is a lead guitarist.
If he tried to take control, the band would disagree. He doesnt control shit. Jam band fans often find a place to say stupid shit. "Trey killed phish"......etc etc.
It is what it is and jake is probably the most talented person in the band. Go figure they let him go nuts. He doesnt steal time.
He is perfect for their sound.
Why do so many jam band fans say such stupid shit? I dont know....but I think I have some idea.
Its because they dont know what to say. They have no fucking idea what is going on up there.
Its like old school phish fans that shit on phish. Get a clue, i would say to them. So often people are just critics even if they dont know shit about music. The worst type of phish fan is the kind that thinks they have something to teach phish. Thats the funniest shit ever.
Ya, I love phish more than almost any band ever. I wont compare them to any other band because I cant. That would just be stupid. Is trey better than jimi hendrix was? ----------no comment is fitting.............lol One was a mathematician, and one was a wild blues wizard. Who was better? Trick question?

yeah they are a very good jamband but since i quit smoking weed the only jamband that has interested me remotely is the grateful dead. i seriously think you have to be high/tripping to appreciate jambands musi to the fullest. it's just not the same sober or on non psychedelic drugs.

Wow. That is the dumbest thing I have ever read, thanks.
No, its isnt the same without psychedelic drugs....... Correct sir.........lol
I have never been to a show on psychedelics except for the last phish show, coventry.
Im just a jazz musician. I dont know how much you appreciate bands when not on psychedelic drugs.

yeah they are sweet!
first live show i ever saw while on LSD was umphrey's..
get their live shit...nothing too fancy is my favorite song
i saw them at the egyptian room in indianapolis and you could definitely call it "acid drenched"...
i agree that they arent as standout as phish, but they are great...i like sts9 and string cheese about the same as umphrey's...umph a little more tho...
definitely go see them if you are interested...its a good time

this should probably be in Music, Art, and Literature, no?
Umphrey's are OK, I'm a pretty big fan of live improvisational bands ("jambands" if you want to use that generic term, although i find it funny that the same "genre" could describe STS9 and Yonder Mountain) and while I've seen UM probably 15-20 times, I never have gotten into them at all. In my mind, after GD and then Phish, a touring band can't really be guitar-based without just rehashing a played-out formula. in terms of "new" bands (ie, not Ratdog and not Phil & Friends), i'm all about STS9 & a handful of "newgrass" bands (Yonder, Rail Road Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, etc).
Haha, as I post this saying I don't really dig them, the office I'm in has some UM show playing (one of the kids I work with is a much bigger fan of their music than I am )
as for finding L at one of their shows, you probably won't have much trouble - although I've noticed that a lot of their fanbase is quite a bit younger and probably don't have as big of a touring family as do kids on Ratdog tour, so it might be a bit harder to find, a bit more expensive, and a bit shittier quality.
and finally, RE the people talking about new years in ATL w/ sts9, i'm definitely there. it makes for a funny celebration, as just a few blocks from the Tabby, Panic plays 3 nights; and there is also some big college football game in ATL that weekend too - so you get a big variety of people in the city, all with the same common goal of getting far too fucked up and entering the new year with what would be a list-full of regrets if you could only remember what happened
