The art of Bonsai Trees.
    #7310956 -

So, I'm just wondering if anyone's into the art of bonsai.  I've been thinking of getting into it, and I heard fall is the prime time to start because the trees go dormant and you can shape them more easily?  I don't know I could be wrong...

I do know that I want to get into it though, and i know that trees are living entities, not house pets, and must be carefully maintained as if they were in their natural environment.  I will strive to achieve this.

But for now, is anyone into it?  And if so, any cool photo?

No, you see it's a living artform, you design it as it ages, you work with it and allow it to grow while keeping it at a smaller form, but you don't hinder it from growing, you just make it grow in smaller sizes.  You can grow pear and apple trees and such, pines, evergreens of all sorts.  Anything can be made into a bonsai, it just has to be grown and trained properly.

It takes a looong time to know what you're doing, and a looong time to see any results.

There are tons of good books you can read but you need someone to show you what to do if you really want to understand it.

I want to do it for meditation and art purposes. I'm fine with it taking time, years pass a lot faster lately.

Haha, it's frustrating as fuck and doesn't require that much time unless you have a ton of trees.

I had quite a few bonsai trees twenty years ago when I still lived in Canada. One of the most difficult things for me about moving here to the Dominican Republic was having to give away my bonsai collection.

I had a Chinese Elm that was really nice looking. Started life as a seedling in Okinawa right at the end of WWII. So about forty three years old when I had to give it up. To buy one like it today would run somewhere between a thousand and two thousand dollars.

I also had a Shimpaku that was not even a foot high but had beautiful form and great foliage. Maybe twenty-five years old when I gave it away. One of that quality today would run maybe eight hundred to a thousand bucks.

I had a few smaller maples and a couple boxwoods, and a few cypress too. I miss them still, sometimes.

While I journey the west coast, I was thinking of searching for seeds and such.  Is there a way to collect specimens from nature without harming nature?

While I go on my bonsai growing journey, I may ask you a few questions in the years to come. :o

I've been playing with bonsai for 5 years or so, and finally this year I feel like I'm starting to get the feel for it. I've got a vine maple that I started from seed 5 or so yrs ago. It's starting to take on a nice shape.

Phred, that must have been really hard to leave your trees behind. There are some tropicals that make nice bonsai too though, like ficus and scheffelera. Even bouganvilla can make a nice bonsai. Do you have any where you live now.
