How much do you spend on entertainment utilities?
    #7307333 -

Currently I pay $35/month for telephone, $10/month for dial-up, and about $20 for Netflix (DVD delivery). ~ $65

I'm thinking if I can get high-speed intraweb, phone and cable for under a hundred dollars it would be a good switch, so my question is... if a person has high-speed net access is Netflix still worth it?

Is there anything on TV that I couldn't get for free using the internet?

In other words, if I have high-speed do I still need cable and netflix?

I pay about $120 for high speed internet, HDTV and DVR. I spend about another $40 on my cell-phone so about $160 total. With my Comcast service I can get HD movies for $3.99 a piece and I may get a few per month.

I don't do netflix since I can get HD movies and I am not charged if a month goes by and I don't use them.

I still pay for cable because I can't get HDTV anywhere else.

i split $45/month on cable internet with my roommate and i'm lucky enough to have my $50/month cell phone bill taken care of by my mother because i'm still a full time student. My roommate and i were splitting the blockbuster version of netflix for $15/month for a little while, but stopped because i can use the internet to get anything.

so all i pay is about $25/month plus the odd movie rental every now and again.

Yeah, but, with Netflix you can get unlimited movies for a flat rate price.  Plus you can watch 17 hours of movies instantly online, free of charge.  I'd stick with keeping Netflix.. :smirk:

You're right, but I can go a month without watching a movie, and I enjoy HD movies a lot more than regular DVD. The 17 hours of watching movies on a comp. isn't worth it since I have a relatively large screen TV.

Too much!

$124/mo for HD-DVR with Standard and Digital Classic (no premium channels) and 6Mb/s Cable Modem service.

$19/mo for (3 at a time) Blockbuster rentals. (DVD's on my Denon DVD-2910 get up-converted to 1080i and rival HD very closely.)

And now I'm toying with the idea of adding Showtime to my HD line-up for another $4.99/mo, but I can d/l .torrent files of just about anything Showtime has in just minutes, but the quality isn't great.

Dude, you're on dial-up? :rofl2:

I have no phone, I have no internet at home (this isn't my computer), I have no netflix, I have no cable.

I spend about $15 a month renting movies.

You lost me here, I don't like to spend a lot of time d/l ing and don't know jack about computers.  My main reason for getting cable would be for Showtime, and the main reason for getting high-speed would be to get more music... but I like the art that comes with a CD and to support the people who make the music.

I doubt that I'd actually watch any movies on my computer.... even though it's a monster.

And yeppers, I'm still on dial-up and will stay that way until the price goes way down.  Really, it isn't that slow for what I use it for... shroomery and minimal work obligations... also my computer at work has high speed and I get an hour lunch to fool around - except visiting the shroomery, which is probly a blessing.  Maybe I'll just activate my shroomery e-mail service. :nerd:

I've probably spent over a grand on my DVD/VHS collection in the past few months, though it's probably worth about 3 times that much.

i get both HBO and SHO and let me tell you the movie selections on both channels is just fucking crap.  Pretty much the only reasons i keep them is to watch the series (like weeds and the wire) they offer.  Personally i say you're better off spending the 5 bucks a month on a beer

I'd keep netflix if I were you. I could never watch a 2 hour movie on my computer, it'd be much nicer to chill on a couch and watch it on the TV.

No way man. Netflix has an infinitely better selection than Blockbuster. If you're serious about film, Netflix is the only way.

you could always get the free trial version of DVDsanta and burn avi files to a dvd.

or you could spend $40 on a new dvd player at best buy and get one that plays .avi files, then just burn the movies/shows to DVDs as regular data dvds, thus allowing you to have like 6-8 700mb .avi movies on one dvd, rather than just 2 hours of movie playtime. that's what i do.

Seeing as how you've actually watched movies on my couch I must take that into consideration.  Wifey and I are planning on moving a leather recliner into the barn library because it stays much toastier in the winter.

From what I hear, the quality of downloads never matches Netflix and it takes a lot of time... plus I can buy a whole season of Weeds or Californication for ~ $20.oo

$15/month - do you live in mountains of NC?

I just watched the coolest special on National Geographic channel, this guy was raising wild wolves, letting them eat out of his mouth... incredible.  Even if I could get NG w/o cable I'd still want to have teh official DVD.

Nugcasts will burn to CD from i-pod, work intarweb for downloading chords and tabs... man, I'm a highclass cheapo.

divx encoded avi files have surprisingly good quality for how small they are. although, it's true the quality is not quite as good, you can hardly notice the difference unless you're looking for it. plus, you don't have to get avi files when you dload movies. you could look for the actual .iso image files, so it's an exact copy of the movie, and then just burn that to dvd with absolutely no loss in quality.

however, i understand your wanting to pay for the real thing.
