Good time to buy.

While the Dow is down, the 200 day moving average of nearly all my stocks is up.

Stocks... Hmmm...

Worldwide there is quite some unrest at the exchanges. Derivatives may one day soon cause an unprecedented crisis. The dollar is anemic at best. The man in the white house is stacking trillions upon trillions of dollars of debt onto the currency $ that is the driving force behind much of the world economy.

Chinese investors use stocks etc as a form of gambling, mostly without any proper knowledge of the market or its dynamics. Hedge funds are stripping big companies for a quick fix, causing great damage after they moved on to other companies.

REAL inflation, not the BS figures we're fed but REAL ACTUAL inflation on the Dollar and Euro hovers around 6%/year, making any investment that yields less than those 6% (including just about all savings accounts and some retirement plans) actually a way to lose money instead of earn it.

You might want to convert a portion of your portfolio to precious metals, particularly silver and/or gold, to hedge against a possible collapse of fiat currencies and the stock markets. Especially silver looks rather undervalued at the moment and might rise to dazzling heights within the coming decade.

As to stocks.. be VERY DAMN CAREFUL. I can't advise you on that.

If your portfolio allows it I would recommend to convert 5-10% of it to silver and 5-10% of it to gold, if you want to hedge against possible financial disasters and have a fair chance to make a profit on it over time also.

If you choose to physically own gold I recommend the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins of 1/4, 1/2 or better 1 troy ounce:

These bullion coins are made especially for investors and are priced at roughly between $200-$700 apiece. Get them as closely to spot price as you can. They are far more liquid than kilo bars. Preferable are the 1 troz coins over any other form of gold.

If you choose for physical silver, the most convenient form of that is the standard 1kg bar of 999 silver (currently around $375)

If you work with bigger numbers the 100oz bar of 999 silver ($1250) is also a viable option. Smalltime investors might go for the 10oz bar ($140) or even 1oz Canadian Silver Maple Leafs or 1oz American Silver Eagles, both at around $14 apiece currently.

If you are going for physical precious metals, rent a box at the bank to store them for safe keeping. Digital precious metals are fine too, as long as they actually reserve the physical metal for you. Anything less than that is nothing more than just another paper promise.

The gold market flucuates the same way the stock market does. It is not a guarantee.

Even if you physically own gold, you will need someone to buy it for it to be worth anything. Take a look at historical gold charts. If you had bought gold in the early 80's (when it was at it's peak), you would have lost money as of today.

There's no guarantee on any investment. But there's an important difference. If you buy gold or silver now, what you are facing is the prospect of having it double in value, or if things go south you can expect it to lose at most half its value.

Stocks on the other hand have the staggering possibility that they lose virtually all their value.

Quote:

You would've been a raging moron to have bought gold back then. Gold was priced at dozens of times their 10-year low. Currently gold and silver are priced at 2-3x their 10yr low.

Gold and silver went through the roof in that time period, and in part this was fueled by raging inflation. Now, real inflation in the EU and US is ramping up again. The price of gold has been artificially depressed by the banks by sneak sale of half their gold supplies on the open market. Its not whether gold is worth $350 or $700, its more like whether its worth $1.250 or $2.500 per troy ounce.

Situation for silver is similar, but even more so. Silver goes at $11.50/troz today, but estimates vary that its actual worth might be between $20-$200 in todays dollars before 2020. Almost all silver that has been mined has been used up. There may be less silver owned today than there is gold. Silver is a resource thats being used up and mining reserve runs out.

I'm bullish on silver: I think in the next decade or so there may be a rise that leaves the situation of the early 80s in the dust. I wouldn't be surprised if the Silver Eagle

that you buy today for $12.50 might be worth $50 before 2017 comes, inflation corrected.

Take a look at historical gold charts.

In this day and age silver is close to its all time low, we are at the rock bottom of a 600 year graph. Have they been wrong for 550 years, or is silver at the moment a tremendously undervalued commodity? A silver dime used to be a day's wages, the silver contained within it paid a days hard work. Silvers alltime high was $800, its alltime low was $5 and today we're at $12. Its a steal really.

Is there risk? Hell yeah! But the risk of losing it all is far smaller with precious metals than with stock or even currencies. They can print surplus dollars and euros all they want (and in fact they are doing so, the governments are "counterfeiting" by printing surplus paper money) but they cannot print extra gold and silver.

Silver is a small pond to fish in. If someone decides to buy "a billion dollars of silver" for instance to corner the market like the Hunt brothers tried in the 1970s, the result will be the same: The silver price will go through the roof, perhaps $50 for a Silver Eagle or higher.

The risk is there, but this holds true with all investment.

i would get my money out of the US. pick a good set of international mutual funds and dump there every month. at this point, the US economy is completely dictated by foreign govt through their holdings of US debt (bonds). the time of the american dynasty is coming to an end. emerging markets in asia are going to dominate as long as the oil holds out.

my advise: dump the US dollar and invest in international no load mutual funds (if you are a long term investor.)

I just bought more. Buy quality companies that aren't going out of business anytime soon. The market always fluctuates - this is just another. It'll come back up if you're dealing with quality.

Its important to realize what a quality company is. There can be great profits in for instance a pharmaceutical company, but such a company is highly dependent on very variable circumstances: their main moneymakers may be outdone by competitor products, new innovations might not make it beyond clinical trials or whole product lines may need abandoning. Pharmaceutical companies are far riskier than for instance a state of the art steelworks company, who rely far less on possible potential and thus are far more reliable. Drug X may be rendered obsolete by Drug Y, but basic products like steel, copper, crude oil, uranium and so forth are building blocks of society, and demand will only go up.

Its important when selecting a company to ask yourself whether they produce a tangible or intangible product, and if tangible whether the product is essential or a luxury item.

I wouldnt be surprised if a serious worldwide economic crisis will present itself in not too long a time. If you have stock in a company that basically sells dreams (intangible products, nonessential luxury items) you'll probably go down with the majority of the stock market. If you'rte going for stocks, I agree with Irradiated, pick good solid companies.

Buy any business after Due Diligence. Learn to read a few charts and study several businesses for which technical indicators they seem to follow. Then only buy with an exit strategy and stick to your goals.

Where wud you buy the silver from?

Doesn't value also vary from country to country?

I'm guessing it would be stupidly expensive in the UK compared to other countries (like everything else is).

In the UK like Europe Silver (but not Gold) is taxed with something in the order of 20% VAT. So in the UK it is a "buy 5 kilos, get 4" kind of deal. However, if a (major, trustworthy) bank reserves physical Silver for you, there's no VAT involved.

Gold has no taxes on it.

Its very possible to get screwed on precious metals. You got to know the spot price and how much you are over it at the time of purchase. In the UK there must be (real, established) banks where you can order gold and silver. If the bank also rents out safe boxes and has good rates for buying back, you simply take the bullion back and forth to your safe box within the building, so that you have the safety of a bank combined with the safety of physically owning the bullion.

I'd say do your business with a real bank. They often have the best rates and you won't be surprised by fake bullion.

An internationally active internet bullion trader that seems legit is www.kitco.com but I have no idea about international shipping/insurance cost with them.

So you will be able to buy close to spot, but with silver you'll be VAT-fucked as usual.

Now I just gotta geuss how much silver would cover the cost of running a safety deposit box until the price rises...

And would that be likely to beat a 5.5% tax free savings account.

Wow, nice rate!

Usually it is best to only convert a portion of your investable sum into precious metals, as a hedge against the rest of your investment getting in trouble.

A simplistic portfolio would be:

25% precious metals
25% on your 5.5% savings account (or a state obligation)
25% low-risk stocks
25% high-risk stocks

a bit less simplistic (but just an example) portfolio assuming faith in fiat currency (your British Pound)

10% Silver (sell half on doubling for free ride)
10% Gold (sell half on doubling for free ride)
30% savings account (keep it liquid, might want to turn it to metal or stocks)
30% low-risk stocks (such as real estate and big primary industries)
20% high-risk stocks (such as promising ambitious projects)
