Why does my PC freeze when I try to watch mpegs?
    #7301461 -

Sometimes I can watch a torrent or mpeg with no problems.

Other times my computer will just freeze and I'll have to restart.

I'm running Windows 2000 and I've tried multiple media players.

Any ideas?

Have you tried VLC media player or updated your codecs?

Try installing the K-Lite Codec Pack. It's just about every codec you will ever need in one package and if the bug is in one of your existing codecs, installing K-Lite might fix the problem.

Some types of encoded video are inherently more CPU-intensive to decode and render than others.

If you have a very old computer, this may be your problem.

Similarly, if you're trying to play 1080i/p content, even on a fairly new computer, it may play jerkily.

I had that problem too, when I'd watch any type of movie or video clip...it would just freeze. I tried codecs, installing different players but still froze. What fixed mine was putting in the cd that came with the motherboard and installing it, everything worked after that.

there are no updates for players supported by the OS. If you had at least XP you could get MediaPlayer10 and have no issues.

i agree that you should try out vlc media player. it's a free open source download that removes the hassle of dealing with codecs. it's just a great all-around media player. try it and see if it helps
