Scary "new" plant/human disease
    #7281085 -

Have you heard of Morgellon's Disease? The media has been talking about it since 02', but just this past month the CDC posted an official request for investigation, taking this to a whole new level.

It's a set of symptoms that involve feeling the sensation of bugs crawling in your skin, diffuse skin rashes, debilitating fatigue and "brain fog," and scariest of all cellulose-like fiber matter growing within and out of skin...see below picture.

Cases have been seen in every state but the majority cluster in the south. I'm an epidemiology graduate student right now, and this terrifies me to the point of silence. Mommy, I dont want to die!

maybe so...I just don't see any to point to living in fear. I won't loose any sleep over it.

Probably not a good idea to lose sleep over it yet...but all the same, still troublesome. We've been messing with nature so much, I wonder if this is some kind of enviro-bug or something. Or a plant virus that crossed over?

There are no fatalities as a result of this, thus far, totally un-researched syndrome. The CDC has started a scientific investigation due to the increase in reports since the internet hype started. It is entirely possible that this "disease" is dermatitis with a healthy helping of paranoia induced by reading bogus internet sites.

totally a possibility. Also, just b/c there are no fatalities doesn't mean this warrants a slow start.

It also does not warrant hysteria.

What is it? A bacteria? virus, fungus etc.?

No idea, it hasn't been laboratory examined yet. Although, they have examined the fiber growth and concluded that it is not lint. It has florescent properties that textiles do not have. The closest thing it resembles in terms of it's chemical and physical properties is simple, everyday, unprocessed plant fiber.

OT but reminds me of the time I had an ingrown hair on my waistline. I popped what looked like a zit and a hair came out. I pulled the hair and it kept coming. Turned out to be like a 6" hair that had ingrown in a coil. Kinda freaky. For a sec I thought I may be unraveling like the dude on the SCIFI TV commercial.
