How come when you wtach a DVD on your computer

A good example is subtitles. On my computer, the subtitles look pixellay, onmy TV it looks like regualr text.

Your TV has very few pixels compared to your computer display.  If you were to watch a DVD on your computer at native resolution, it would be an itty bitty tiny box about the size of a postage stamp (well, a bit bigger, but not by much).  You computer stretches the image to make it big enough for you to see clearly.  However, when you stretch the image, it causes it to look blocky.  This is most obvious on things like text that have lots of straight lines.

Another issue is interleaved video.  A television only displays half of each frame per scan.  As the phosphorous starts to fade from the previous scan, the next field (second half of the frame) is displayed on the alternate scan lines.  On a TV it looks fine, but on a computer, with much faster refresh times, it looks like crap.  Most DVDs are authored as "progressive scan" titles, which avoid this problem.  However, some older DVDs (or anything shot on DV rather than film) will be interleaved.

Could also be a problem with your computer/drivers/etc... :wink:

He is saying that your tv is using a lower resolution. For example your TV's resolution is 640x480(assuming your not using a hd tv) and your computers resolution is 1024x768. Resolution is number of pixels length by number of pixels height. Correct me if I'm wrong, Seuss.

Basicaly, it's how many pixels there are on your screen.

TVs looks alright when watching movies/TV because you're sitting at least 6 feet away from the screen.  Try sitting as close to your tv as you do to your PC monitor.  Not very sharp is it.
TV's can get away with the old 640x480 resolution because low pixel counts look sharper the further you move away from them.  Your eyes cannot spot the individual pixels anymore.

In order to make a PC monitor look good in close range, they've jammed in a whole lot more pixels (which are much smaller than your TV pixels) into a smaller area.

So, say i made an image with quarters on the ground, in a 3'x3' area.  Now imagine making the same image with dimes, in the same 3'x3' area.
I would need MORE dimes, but guess what, the image would look a lot better right?  (more detailed and sharper).

Thats the best way I can explain it.  :lol:

It is also about ratios.  Again, imagine you had a 3'X3' area, but you needed to fit a 4'X3' imagine into it.  You would have to distort the image somehow, and this would make it look crappy.

If you have an LCD monitor the number of pixels always stays the same.  However, the screen (usually) only looks crisp at one resolution (the "native resolution" of the monitor).  Go into the settings and change your screen area and you'll see what I mean. 

Ideally, you want "1:1 pixel mapping" which is when the "native resolution" of a monitor matches the output resolution of the video source.

Also, the subtitles are rendered by the player, and ultimately, through the OS. Subtitles look AWESOME on my machine in whatever font I want.

With a DVD, subtitles are stored as subpictures, not as text. What are you using that can change the font? Some kind of OCR? (

Edit: Oh, you are probably reading line-21 data rather than subtitles...

Oh, well, it should also be noted that I don't watch DVDs, just things that are on DVDs but I have them without media and they are subbed seperately...
