There's also an episode where all of Springfield is drinking cough syrup after homer invents a new drink, The Flaming Homer.

Well yes, but they're just drinking cough syrup... which to the average person only means drinking cough syrup. I doubt Matt Groening has even heard of dextromethorphan.

I agree. Portlands sister city is Springfield, its just across the river. Portland = Shelbyville. I took a campus tour of UofO and that statue looks curiously like Jebediah Springfield. Also the tour guide told us that the comic book guy exists on the business strip.
