the drive up there isnt much
a lot of farm land actually
long highways

in Mid California there isn't much

if you take the right highways you might even get to see the ocean

but thats pretty much it
when you get there go to Berkeley
they have like 5 smoke shops per block!

SANTA CRUZ!!!!! Total hippie town, it is so beautiful there too.

Santa Barbara's pretty historic
Sacramento is the capital, but I forget if it was on the way of the drive up north....

I think he would have to go a bit out of his way to get to it, but all the same there's really not much to do

And Hippie Hill is a hill full of hippies/drug bazaar (limited to weed, ecstasy, mushrooms, lsd, so far as I know)

Hmm... hippy hill doesnt sound like the kinda place I can visit on this trip... :tongue2: ohwell, next time.

So what else is there to see in SanFran?
Any chill clubs, parks, !museums!, etc etc?
Also I might stop by Berkeley, so any local spots there would also be appreciated

Now here's a ride I know well, having lived two years in Santa Cruz and travelling to Oregon and Berkeley from Los Angeles on a regular basis to visit my sisters and my friends.

Whatever you do, don't take interstate 5 north - that highway is straight, farmland, boring and downright maddening at its worst.  101 North will present you with a much more enjoyable twist up the coast, hitting the ocean as you pass through Santa Barbara, and winding its way through wine country from there on (you can of course rock the hwy 1 for the ultimate road trip experience, but it WILL be slow going if you are trying to keep any sort of schedule).  On US-101, you'll see plenty of signs on the road for wine tasting and tours, might even want to take a slight detour to the quirky town of Solvang

To get to Santa Cruz off of 101, you're going to need to break off the fwy in Salinas and take 183N into Castroville (the arctichoke capital of the world they say), and then onto Hwy 1 in Castroville for the remaining 50 miles into Santa Cruz.  Once you get into Santa Cruz, do not delay in getting to Las Palmas taco house by the boardwalk, where I strongly suggest ordering a "Special Burrito", which is sweetly soft melt-in-your-mouth chunks of pork (almost like chile verde) inside a tortilla and the whole shabang is panned fried in butter (or lard?), but either way start topping it with their homemade hot suace and if you have any space in your heart for mexican food, you may just find yourself in heaven.

If you like beaches and just hangin' on the coast, the two I would suggest would be Natural Bridges State Beach (make sure to hike out along the rocky tidepools, if the tide is out, you can get really far and make some new friends in the way of sea otters and seagulls and all sorts of fowl).  Lookin' at the aforelinked map, I used to live on Chico Ave right next to that beach - some very fond memories of that place!

Then once you get up to San Fran, if you make it out into the city and are tired of the mad maze of streets bouncing up and down along the hills, make your way into the Presideo to Baker's Beach  (also the home of www.archive.org :gd_icon:) for a very pleasant view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the mouth of the whole San Francisco bay.

Also of note in SF, if you find yourself in the lower Haight district, check out the Toronado Pub and order yourself a half liter of Aventinus.  An exceptionally tasty Weisbock, rich and spicy, creamy and delicious.  Big ups to ToTheSummit for turning me on to this one!

In Berkeley, if you're lucky enough to hit the area with good timing, see if anyone you might enjoy is playing the Greek Theater on UC Berkeley's Campus.  It's a totally sweet venue, particularly if you are into the music that is being performed!

Have fun and happy trails! :sun:
