You're right, the difference is:

a) It's not stealing, it's copyright infringement.

b) I'm not depriving anyone of property which is rightfully theirs, I'm just using software which I wouldn't pay for anyway.

c) I recognize the incongruity and I'm in the process of switching my system over to Linux and Free software.

Maggotz it's personal for me because I've had almost $2,000 stolen from me by "friends" with the same fucked up thought process as StonedShroom.

yeah, well, people who abuse food stamps really irritate me. My second little part-time gig is at a convenience store and people buy bullshit with food stamps. basically, if it's not hot, they can buy it on EBT. I've never once seen milk, eggs, or any type of real food item bought with food stamps. and 9 out of 10 times there isn't even a kid in sight. Usually people bring in all their friends and they all buy slushies, beef jerky, burritos (they buy the burritos cold, then after they're paid for they go heat them up), and just junk food bullshit in general. I mean, I wouldn't have a problem if they came in and got some milk and juice then saw like a candy bar while they were at the checkstand... but to blatantly abuse the system, it's bullshit.

oh, and about 8/10 times after they make their food stamp purchase they'll pull out a wad of cash and buy cigarettes, rolling papers/blunts, and lotto tickets.

it's bullshit. if they have money for cigarettes and weed (since they're buying blunts) then they have money for food.

i can totally understand that. but i live in a rural farming community in the middle of the worst drought in recorded history. i see families in the grocery store that have NOTHING. their well has dried up and they carry water from the river like they would have done 100 years ago. they are proud people and you can see the pain of shame in their face every time they use a food stamp or WIC voucher.

personally, i feel like they should be handled through charity work and not through forced redistribution of wealth by the govt, but either way, i have compassion for them.

i saw a white kid steal from a gas station. does that mean all white people are thieves?

Automan, I have a legal license for Windows XP, I do like it, but the enhanced DRM and activation in Vista is a dangerous trend which I don't want to support.

There are many valid arguments against copyright infringement, but equating it with theft of personal property isn't one of them.

hey automan, I understand if a disaster happened and people needed help- right now our farmers lost a bunch of their crop due to floods, and the year before that they lost a lot of crops due to drought.

but the people I'm talking about have NO SHAME in using EBT.

I've worked at convenience stores too, Amoco and Circle K. My favorite is the pregnant women who come in to buy junk with food stamps and cigarettes with spare change. I've refused to serve them and fortunately my boss at the time was sympathetic. Imagine if they could buy a DS with food stamps and you'll see where I'm coming from.

man.. tempers flared. i personally don't like the thought of stealing from someone you consider a friend, even if they are bitches with no appreciation for the value of a hard-earned dollar.

that being said, i wouldn't really look down on you like ythan has pronounced he does, despite my mild disapproval. it really is rather contemptible how wasteful and unappreciative some people are. BUT, again, i wouldn't condone it. i do, however, steal from walmart, because they're evil.

maybe you could ask to borrow it, and then just keep it until she asks for it back. which could be indefinitely.
