NYC Shroomerites: steam explosion

Just wondering if you guys can see/were around the explosion when it happened. I just went to the top floor of my building to see if I could see it(I'm ~6 miles from Manhattan). I couldn't, it's so damn hazy today I couldn't even see the Empire State Building.

A friend of mine lives about 10 blocks from where it happened. She said that people were acting crazy and traffic is completely stopped. She also said she heard that the explosion took out about half a block. From what I've seen, the hole from the explosion is at least as wide as an avenue.

NEW YORK - A steam explosion tore through a Manhattan street near Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday during the evening rush hour, killing one person, injuring more than a dozen others and sparking a brief panic about another terror attack.

"It is a steam pipe explosion — not terrorism," New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told WNBC-TV.

One of 12 people taken to Bellevue Hospital later died, a spokesman said. Two others who were seriously injured were being treated at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center. They were in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Emily Berlanstein. A third patient with lesser injuries was also being evaluated, she said. Just for anyone that didnt know like me.

I had no idea steam was just piped under streets like any other civil utility... one would think it's a waste of energy since the stuff is going to cool off between the source and destination.

Yeah they are saying they have detected asbestos floating around in the air there. There is a closed off zone.
