my 7wo kitty just figured out her toy.

so i got this a few days ago.
and i just sat down with her and showed her how it works. and she hasn't quit playing with it.
at least she found something to occupy her :smile:

she's hard to photograph cause she doesn't stay still!

get a kitty! i'd get a puppy if i was allowed, but i'm renting a house.. so maybe when i own one.
she climbs up my pant leg to sit on my lap and try to play with my fingers while i type (which gets kinda annoying, but she's too cute)
her name is lucy.
and i have a rat i've had for a while named gonzo.
i was thinking of either calling my kitty bianca or eliza, but thought lucy would flow better. especially with gonzo.

Cute kitty.

Only one rat? You should get him(her?) a buddy, it sounds wierd but they can get depressed and nervous, possibly develop other behavioral problems when kept solo. :igor:

i read about that. but i was living in a dorm room, with no roommate. so as he got older and bigger, i let him roam around the room a lot while i was in there. i can't let him do that in my new house, because i've been having ant festations. and my room is a mess until the ant problem is solved. then i'll let him roam around again.
i think he might be too old to have a buddy now? i couldn't get a female, cause i don't want to deal with babies. but males may be aggressive? or no. he's about five or six months. and i think fully grown.  i wonder how lucy would treat him.
when i brought him up to my moms during spring break, my cats just liked to watch him, and that's all. but my dog wanted to play with him. my dog is so gentle. she and my cat (at my moms) curl up together all the time.

the two kittens i raised that i was old enough to remember and raise them myself, have both been male orange tabbies (i love their personalities). so this is new for me.
my mom has had two female blue russians, and they always seem so calm and laid back.
i'm curiuos how lucy will be when she's older.
my roommate has a cat (she went home for the summer, so i'm taking care of her cat, which is a long haired fully black  cat with gray hair that curls as it comes out of her ears) but i can't let lucy in contact with her cat, spooky, until lucy gets her shots next weekend.
but one time i didn't close my door well enough to latch, and spooky came in and saw lucy, who was sleeping, and hissed, and i shooed her out.
sooo i don't know how that is going to work.
plus spooky is an outdoor/indoor cat, but i refuse to let lucy (or any of my cats i'll own) go outdoors. so i don't know how spooky will influence her and lucy will get jealous.. but i won't know all this for another week. i keep her in my room/bathroom all day and night. which is fine, until sometimes she gets lonely when i'm watching tv out in t he living room and starts crying.
but she usually just goes to sleep.
and wow, i wrote too much.
just bored i guess. and writing gives me something to do.

Lots of human contact is the next best thing, but no replacement. He's still young enough to take on a cagemate, but don't get a rat that's recently gone through or is going through puberty*. They're social animals by nature, so if they're both past puberty they'll probably get along good. Just introduce them in a neutral area, like a couch or bed. Keep them in separate cages for a week or so, but right next to each other. You should be able to tell by how they act towards each other if they'll get along.  And no, don't get a female unless you want dozens of ratlets.

*My housemate keeps feeder rats for his monitor lizard sometimes, we had a handful that all hit puberty at once.
They go apeshit violent. I came home to find the dominant male literally eating the brains of his cagemates.

lucy? that's a great name. i'd really like a cat, i love how the are curious and so independent, makes for some good entertainment.

Well, one day I was on the couch taking bongrips (as usual) when I noticed Beatrice was chasing the hits as the drifted by the cage. She'd sniff at them and brux (grind her teeth together), a sign of contentment. So I took a big pull and blew it right at her. She kinda squatted down, squinted her eyes, and seemed to soak it up. If she's out of the cage and you're smoking, expect a visit. :stoner:

Hester, however, wants nothing to do with it and bails to the other side of the cage when she gets even the slightest whiff. The pic above was taken milliseconds before she realized what I had.  :seeya:

i'll try to keep that in mind. i don't have enough money to buy a bigger or another cage for another rat.
once i get settled in this new house, which i just moved into exactly a week ago.. i'll give him a lotttt of attention like i used to.
the sucky thing is, he doesn't like toys. and he doesn't like chewing on things. except this dog bone thing. it's some meaty thing wrapped in rawhide that he likes. but besides that, he doesn't like chewing on annnythinggg.
i've tried paper towel roll, nope. tried toys at petsmart. nopppe.
oh well.
what i don't like about him though. he pees a lot. not like puddles, but as he walks on me, like my arm, or anything, it will be a trail of piss, like a fucking snail. that gets annoying.

Check craigslist in your area. I got my rat's first cagemate for free from there and they threw in a small glass aquarium (that I've since turned into a glovebox, yay recycling).

Mine never chewed on anything until they were about a year old. I wound up just leaving a bunch of stuff in the cage, wood blocks, paper towel rolls, plain paper. Eventually they will have to chew or their teeth get too big. If you feed them hard food they may not need anything to chew on.

And yeah, males mark a lot more than females do. Plus their nuts grow huge and drag when they walk.
