Re: Is everything what?s white mycelium?

Yes this is most likely Mycelium. Mycelium can take on several characteristics including, Tomentose (cottony/fluffy) and Rhizomorphic (Strandy/Ropey). It is possible (happens a lot) that you will see different types of growth in a jar, this is ok. Just keep an eye out for anything that is NOT white (blue, green red, gray), these are contaminants and are bad.

From what you're said though, sounds like Mycelium to me! You're almost there man!

No, everything that's white isn't mycelium.
Have you heard of the COBWEB MOLD?
You can find info and picture on it here on the Shroomery.
By the way, it sounds like mycelium so don't get all worried now.
Cobweb mold is usually transparent (you can see through it and see the vermiculite.
Cobweb mold also grows on the dry vermiculite layer.

snoc, you said:

"white growth which is partly `fluffy? and looks on the outside like little `strings?."

If it's pure snow-white, it's almost certainly mycelium. That 'kite-string' like growth is the rhizomorphs going for it, it's very distinctive and unlikely to be anything else. It's also very unlikely that the cake can become contaminated - the rhizomes can usually outcompete any nasties.

Please keep us informed, especially if this is your first time, or your first success. Every first fruiting is a tiny, tiny victory in The War On The War On Drugs.
