OMG, Liz that's horrible...I just cried reading your post.

Don't write off getting another cat, though.  I had a bad streak where I lost a couple of cats in a row and swore I wouldn't get another one, but it wasn't fair to the one cat I had left.  It sounds like Max and the dogs need another buddy to play around with.

I've buried a fair amount of cats in my time, we had thirteen at one point. The worst of it all is that you never forget a pet that dies . I could probably quote 30 cat names off the top of my head.

I do hope that you don't actually buy your pets though. There are so many abandoned pets out there, and getting hold of a young kitten at this time of year is just going down to your local animal refuge and choosing one of the many they will have coming from pregnant cats abandoned a month ago. They will be very tame as the handlers will have touched them from birth so they become human friendly and are adopted.

Go and save a homeless kitten in Commodus' honour.

I'm really really sorry for your loss.

Yeah, well, you can't blame the dog, its conditioning should have been better evaluated before you decided to let it into your home with baby kittens. Again, I am sorry for Commodus' loss, and Maximus having to deal with the loneliness/depression/seperation anxiety. maybe you'll find a buddy for him in at the right time.

I don't want any member of my tribe/family group to be offed, I can imagine how you feel, he was a part of your family. I've had a dog and 2 cats go on, and a turtle run away on me. It's never easy.

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

Commodus was the first to die in the movie, too...it was his time. I'm sorry :frown:

Hopefully this won't get taken the wrong way, just an observation I'm making. I notice this while watching movies in the theatre too. People get more upset about cats and dogs dying than they do about people. Perhaps, we all subconsciously think that people deserve to die because they are not as innocent and vulnerable as pets. I just can't feel that amount of empathy for an animal. I'm sorry. While I remember getting upset when we had to put my dog of 11 years to sleep 5 years ago. I just can't bring myself to grieve as if it was a human.

Like I said, I don't want to upset anyone because I know that there are a lot of people who treat their pets as if they're human beings. I only want to point out how strange it is how some people get more upset about a pet dying than about a human.

P.S. I hope that dog gets put to sleep.

Damn Liz, I'm sorry to hear of your little friend's death. He was a really pretty kitten, too. In that one pic it looks like he's smiling. At least he was happy during his lifetime.

I can tell from the pictures that she was a spunky kitten, and she must have really enjoyed her short, but amazing life. From the sounds of it, you seem to be really good with animals (observing them and pet-sitting others), so don't put yourself down for this mishap. It is very unfortunate, and I'm so sorry to hear about it. Losing pets in anyway is always a very depressing thing to experience.

Hope all gets better!

I'm having a cup of tea made right now in honor of commodus.  I remember you posting pictures of the little guy a while back.  Damn shame.  I really hope you get another cat for maximus.  On any account, good luck with dealing with this.

That is tragic, I'm so sorry Liz.  I understand how you feel about not wanting to get another kitty right away, but I'm sure Commodus would definately understand.   Maybe when the situation isn't so raw you could find Max a new friend.

Thanks for all of the kind posts everyone.

It seems that tragedy has struck again.  The woman who I adopted Commodus from recently had to deal with the death of one of the kittens still under her care.  He was playing underneath the couch, and she did not know he was under there....and she opened the recliner...:(  So awful.

Trendal, I actually thought the same thing, as odd as it sounds.  I guess he was amptly named.

DrCamacho, I don't know why people get more upset about animals dying that people.  Maybe, like you mentioned, it is because animals are for the most part pretty pure and innocent.  I would certainly be a lot more upset, if say, my sister died.

We're not going to push for the dog that did this to get put to sleep.  I just can't see what good would come of that.  A Jack Russell is bred to hunt small animals and rabbits.  It was doing what came naturally to it.  Sure, it would be revenge - but it wouldn't solve anything.  It wouldn't bring our kitten back, and it wouldn't make me feel any better.  We tried to be careful by keeping them separate, and failed to do so.

Last night, Maximus slept in our room.  He has never done that before.  He cried and cried outside of our door until I let him in.  He's so lonely, it's breaking my heart.

When I first spoke to this woman about adopting a kitten from her, she told me about Commodus and his "twin brother", and told me how they had very similar personalities.  Maybe we'll consider adopting him, assuming of course that he was not the one crushed bye the recliner :frown:

Awww...I almost smashed one of my kitties in the recliner awhile ago, so I know how easy it is to not notice they're in there.

I know it's hard right now, but I'd definitely pick up Commodus' twin brother if he's available.  If nothing else, it'll give Maximus another companion so he won't keep looking around for Commodus.

Like I said, I was in a similar situation and was sure I'd never get another cat, but someone I worked with had the 2 most adorable kitties I'd ever seen and I couldn't refuse.  For me, not having a kitty running around was a constant reminder of what had happened.  Of course, I still miss the cats I lost, but my new kitties are a good distraction.

I keep thinking that maybe part of the problem was how much he loved dogs.  How much he trusted them to just be big playmates for him.  Perhaps I should get into a bit of back story.

The woman I adopted Commie through lives in Tennessee, and works for the same canine rescue group that I volunteer for.  This lady is certifiable....but in a good way.  She rescues every kind of animal you can possibly think of, and finds them homes.  Goats, sheep, dogs, cats...everything.  One think that she does every summer, during "kitten season" is take in orphaned or unwanted litters of kittens and bottle feed them until they are old enough to eat solid food, and finds them homes.  When I adopted Commie from her last weekend, she had 23 kittens in her house.  She has a yellow lab who is sort of a surrogate "mother" to these kittens.  The lab sleeps with the kittens, and protects them from the other dogs fiercely.  I'm sure that Commie saw my yellow lab and instantly knew that she was a friend to him.  He used to nuzzle at my dogs faces and stick his head into their mouths to play and get a bath - I keep wondering if maybe he was trying to do that with the Jack Russell and that's what happened :frown:

Here is a picture of Commie playing with my puppy Molly, doing his typical nose lick and nuzzle routine

and this is the picture that made me pick Commie out of 23 other kittens.  I instantly knew that we wanted him, just from his playful grin.

God I fucking miss him so much.  :frown:  I got anew camera today, and normally I would be so excited to play with it and explore all the new features it has....but all I can think of is how badly I wish he were here so I could take some pictures of his cute little grin.

Dogs just don't maul cats to death I've had many big dogs and many little cats that got along fine, the animal is clearly out of control and should be put down. If my st.bernard and german shepherd could bathe kittens without mauling them to death I'm sure a jackrussle could manage. It won't bring back your kitten or solve any problems but it will keep future problems from happening, nexttime it could be a baby.

This dog didn't live around cats, so was not used to them. If Commodus was bigger, and knew how to protect himself and use his claws, he probably could have made the dog back off....but he was so little that he didn't stand a chance. I can't justify taking someone's dog from them for a mistake that we made. We let the dog into our house. We accidentally let Commodus out of the office. We trusted the woman when she said her dogs were ok with cats. She had no idea this was going to happen, and neither did we.

Dogs DO sometimes just maul cats to death. A friend of mine has a 120 pound rottweiler, who lived with her cat for THREE years, with no issue. They used to nap together, play together - everything. Then one day, the dog picked the cat up in its mouth, and shook it violently, snapped its neck. Dogs have a hunting instinct, and unless you train them to be 100% gentle with small animals, accidents like this can happen.

Edit - This Jack Russell lives with a 14 month old baby boy, and is nothing but gentle with him.
