Congratulations for buying into different BS.

Hmmm... and without knowing a thing about me, didn't you just put my beliefs into your own little box?

Apparently you missed the point completely, or are trying to avoid it. It was about how you portrayed yourself with your comments, and with comments like that you feed the stereotypes and misconceptions that keep the war on drugs going. At least I hope they are misconceptions.

And do you really expect nobody to speak up when you say something like "terrorism is BS" or that our government murders innocent people for no reason other than their beliefs?

Do drugs make people act this way, or are people like this just attracted to drugs? Does long-term drug use destroy one's ability to control their cynicism and put things into perspective?

Thanks for demonstrating your ability to stereotype just as much as any "cynical drug user".

No, but long-term exposure to a society that is intolerant of a plant, wastes billions fighting a failed war, and jails thousands of its peaceful citizens every year tends to "destroy one's ability to control their cynicism".

I'd like to think that drug legalization (and the corresponding expanded use of certain drugs) would be good for society, but maybe I'm wrong.

Show me the study that says legalizing drug X will lead to more prevalent use in a population. I'd put very good money on the fact that you cannot and are indeed spouting bullshit.

I was stating the common stereotype, the perception most people have of drugs and drug users. Those aren't my own prejudices. Geez. Obviously I'm a drug user and don't fit those stereotypes by a mile. I'm the kind of person who constantly re-evaluates my perceptions and opinions. And to be honest, the comments like those in this thread have me reconsidering my current notion that legal soft drugs like marijuana are not inherently harmful (maybe even beneficial) to society in general.

As long as the only ones complaining about the drug laws are our government's (and by extension the American People's) self-defined enemies, who cares if drugs are illegal? But when patriotic, law-abiding, productive members of the community are hurt by the drug laws, then you can make a persuasive argument for legalization.

Would those be the same "peaceful citizens" with a "kill a drug war supporter" at the bottom of every post? You're the drug czar's best friend.

Are you seriously saying that marijuana use has not increased in California since medical marijuana was legalized there? I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but you'd be very lonely arguing that there has been no increase because of the change in the laws.

Marijuana was legalized in California? That's news to me, and probably the rest of the country.

If marijuana use has increased there, which I'm still waiting to see your sources for this information, it is most likely because of their laughable medical marijuana system. High school kids can walk into clinics and walk out half an hour later with medical cannabis cards.

Hell, if the government legalized and taxed drugs they money would probably support the terroristic "war on terror"...id have a hard time smoking a blunt and thinking I just helped kill some innocent durka durka because they believe different than my government

</stereotype>

I see drug users spouting off like this so often that it makes me rethink whether I should really be supporting drug decriminalization/legalization. Maybe legalization would be a huge mistake and would result in throngs of anti-social anarchists imagining that our government is going around murdering innocent people just because of their beliefs -- but at the same time terrorism is BS. I'd like to think that drug legalization (and the corresponding expanded use of certain drugs) would be good for society, but maybe I'm wrong.

Do drugs make people act this way, or are people like this just attracted to drugs? Does long-term drug use destroy one's ability to control their cynicism and put things into perspective?

Why do so many drug users insist on making society their enemy? That is the true reason that drugs became illegal and why they stay illegal. When/if that changes, so will the drug laws.

On the topic of this article, the fact that hashish was used to obtain the explosives used in the terror attack that killed 191 people is worth noting. And rather than seizing on this opportunity to call your government murderous terrorists, you could use this opportunity to illustrate how our drug laws are counterproductive when it comes to our safety:
Quote:
If cannabis were legal, then there would be no black market, thus there would be no funds going to terrorism. It is the war on drugs that funds "Islamist" terrorism.

I just have one question to ask you. Have you ever been arrested for possessing the dried flowers of a plant? I have. Aside from my infrequent drug use, I'm a hard-working average joe that just wants to be left the fuck alone so I can smoke in the privacy of my own home. Apparently that's too much to ask of my government though. Thank god they know what's best for me.

In my opinion, this is one of the most persuasive arguments against our drug laws -- that people should be left alone.

For the most part, people who support the drug laws do so because of the perception that they are threatened or endangered somehow by the drug use of others.

In my view, if drug use turns people into paranoid and cynical conspiracy theorists who hate society and government, or varying degrees of that, then society does have a legitimate interest in controlling private drug use by adults. Just my opinion, I know others won't agree.

This is why I posed my original question, whether it was the drugs or the people who are attracted to the drugs. There seems to be a correlation, but correlation doesn't mean causation.

I'm still of the opinion that our drug laws are severely broken and unfair, and a bigger problem than the disease they aim to cure. But I no longer see it as such a one-sided case; that maybe there is a legitimate public risk in allowing private drug use.

I'm still open on this one, and more inclined to believe that the correlation is because anti-social people are attracted to illegal drugs, rather than to believe that the drugs are responsible for their behaviors/attitudes.

Drugs don't do turn people into cynical conspiracy theorists.

The reason for the correlation is that people who take drugs are the same people who are know about drugs, the facts, the risks, etc. and are therefore vastly more capable of making realistic assessments of such drugs that severely contradicts government policy.

<<that maybe there is a legitimate public risk in allowing private drug use.>>

You certainly do carry an interesting and differing opinion pokermush, and I welcome that on our forum as typically we do only see the one-sided comments regarding different drug-related articles posted here.

I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty, were my drug of choice (marijuana) fully legalized and regulated tomorrow, not a thing would change as far as 'risk to the public' because of me. I'd still smoke only at home, and only drive when I became sober again. The only thing that might change would be the fact I would be getting my smokes from a local convenient store instead of a dealer on the streets.

Also, the paranoia you speak of mainly comes from the fact that those who use the drug cannot do so without fear of being hauled into jail and caged like an animal for non-violent use. Even after my arrest, my paranoia level is quite low as I don't smoke in public, so nothing has really changed there. And again, my distaste for my own government mainly stems from the fact that a war is indeed waged against it's own citizens who harm no one but themselves. The only two things I see being harmed because of my pot use are my lungs and the mj plants that were (presumably) ripped up and killed in order to process the pot I smoke.
